Alta Maud Levins wns born near Fossil, Wheeler County, Oregon, Dec. 27, IS88, and died Oct. 28, 1908, at Klkton, Douglas county, Oregon, aged 19 years, 10 months, 1 day. Her parents, W. H., and Maggie Levins, moved from Wheeler county to Klkton, when Alta was three years old. When four and one-halt years old Bhe went to visit the public school one day, and, having an active mind and being eager to loam, she imme diately became a regular student. She eagerly pursued her school work, se curing her Eighth grade diploma with the class of 1908. During these school years she bravely met and overcame obstacles that would have caused many to turn back from their course. Sickuess of her father and then of herself kept her from her school work a great deal, and dur ing the last year or more of her Hfr sho climbed tho hill to the school house by the aid of crutches. Her ef forts and her ambition were reward ed not only by her diploma, but also by a silver medal for excellence In speaking In the Woman's Christian Temperance Union contest held lntf spring. Alta joined the church when she was about ten years of age. She wot faithful in attendance, and did her part of the church work, especially helping with the music. In the Sun d..y School. She gladly played the organ for the Christian church. Alta was of a kind and friendly dispoBltlon. Sho lived In this com munity nil her life without an enemy and with the friendship of all. She passed her short life In the pursuit of what Is best and noblest. Her trust was In God. The very night of her death, she said to her father. ' "We will trust In God," and repeated ll. ! Thus her young life came to Its close and we have one more example of Christian faithfulness to encour age us on our way. She leaves, besides her father, W. . II.
