Virgin forests are of ten fully stocked with flrst-class tim ber, but this stock has been laid In very slowly, on account of the waste ful competition which Is carried on constantly between the rival trees Then, too, In the virgin forests there are very many trees which have reached maturity and stopped grow ing, and these occupy space which. I.AXI) Fit ATI) CASES. Supreme Court Denies Four Petition, Two From Oregon Men, WASHINGTON, Nov. 3. Justice Stafford, of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia, today over ruled the motions for new trials made by Frederick Hyde and Joseph Schneider, convicted last spring of conspiracy Ho defraud the United States In connect kin with securing land grants In Oregon and Washing ton. The motion to arrest the judg ment was not disposed of, pending which the sentence probably will be deferred. The defendants allege the Jury was coerced Into agreeing on tho verdict and sought to have the Jurors Interrogated. The court, however, held that that would allow the jur ors to testify that their verdict whb their honest Judgment and opinion of the evidence, a matter as to which, according to the result, the defend ants themselves Invoked, the Jurors cannot testify. Yesterday, the Supreme court de nied the petition of WHInrd N. Jones and Thaddeus S. Potter, for a writ of review. Jones and Potter, who .ire (residents of Oregon, were sen tenced to Imprisonment on a charge of having defrauded the government by Illegal land entries In that state under the homestead law. The charge was conspiracy, but they pleaded the statute of limitations. The decision will practically uphold the verdict of the lower court. Must Ilrgin Serving. PORTLAND, Or..' Nov. 3. Just as soon as the mandate of United Ktutes Supreme Court, denying to Willard M. Jones and Thaddeus S. Potter the writ of review, reaches Portland, the wo local Inwyera who were convicted 'n connection with Oregon land frauds, will have to begin serving he sentence Imposed upon them by fudge Hunt. Jones and Potter were indicted by he federal grand Jury, September 2, 190ft, and were convicted October 14, 1906. Jones, according to evl lence produced at the trial, was the ing-lender in the conspiracy to de 'raud the government out of timber ands. He was sentenced to a year it McNeil's Island and to pay a line f 2000. Potter, because It npponred that he ind been only a dupe of Jones, was lentenced to serve Bix months In the tlultnotnah county Jail and to pay a fine of $500. Jones and Potter con lued their operation to timber hinds In the vicinity of the Slletr, Indian teservatton. Their scheme was to ;et ex-sotdlers to make Mings on the lalniH.
