TIIANKHOIVI.VO I'ltCM-'lJIMATION WASHINGTON, Oct. 31. The president today Issued the annual Thanksgiving proclamation, Betting apart . Thursday, Nov. 26, as "a day ot thanksgiving and prayer." "Year by year," declares the pro clamation, "this nation grows In utrengUi and worldly power. Dur ing the century and a quarter that has elapsed since our entry into the circle of Independent people we have grown and prospered In material things to a degree never before known, and now known In any other country, i The thirteen colonies which straggled along the seacoast of the Atlantic and were hemmed In but a few miles west of tidewater by the Indian haunted wilderness, have been transformed Into the mightiest re public which the world has ever seen. Its domalna stretch across the con tinent from one to the other of the greatest oceans, and It oxerclses do minion alike In the Arctic and tropic realms. The growth In wealth and population has surpassed even the growth in territory. Nowhere else In the. world Is the average of Indi vidual comfort and material well bolng as high as In our fortunate land. "For the- very reason thus abounded, we owe to the Almighty to show equal progress In moral and In apirltual things. With a nation, ar with the Individuals who make MP - nation, matertalwell-belng is an In dlspensible foundation. Hut thr foundation avails nothing of itself That life Is wasted and worse than wasted which Is spent In piling, heal on heap,, those things which min later merely to the pleasure of th body and to the power that rests only on wealth, Upon material well-be lng as a foundation must be ruined the structure of the lofty life of thr spirit, If this nation Is properly tr fulfill its groat mission and accom plish all we so ardently hope and de sire. Tho things of the body arr good, tho things of tho Intellect bet. ter, but bost ot all UilugB of th( soul, for In tho nation, as in tho In dividual, In the long run It Is char acter that counts. Let us, therefore as a people, sot our faces resolutely against evil and with broad charity with friendliness and good will to--ward all men, but with unfllnrhlnp determination to smlto down wrong strive with all the strength that Ir given us for righteousness In public and In private life." LAX IN LAW KNKOIM'KMKNT. WA8HINOTON, Nov. 2. Ikiuglft County Output liirmt.Hliig lllg Poultry HusiiicHN. OAKLAND. Or.. Nov. S. The growing of all kinds of livestock In this section is developing Into an enormous Industry. There Is no gain saying the fact Hint climatic couill tlons in this lornllty cannot he ex celled when applied to the produc tion of hlKh grade cattle, sheep, hogs and tho feathered tribes. The fact that more cnttle, hogs and turkeys are aunually ahlpped from Oakland than from any other station on the Southern l'aclftc lines In Oregon Is ample evidence that unusual condl- tlons exist In this respect. On account of the peculiar geo graphical settings, this section en Joys a very equable climate tho year round and It la not subject to sudden extremes of temperature, either in summer or winter. Livestock stsyr on the green pastures all the wlnte and Is In good shipping condition several weeks earlier than stock rais ed in other section of the north west; consequently, the stockman of this locality has a field all to hi self In placing his products on the market. Situated on the main line of the Southern I'arinc railroad, ISO miles south of Portland, there Is no part or the I'nlted Slates which presents a more Inviting field to the stockgrow- er than can be found In the territory adjacent to Oakland. Sixteen hours from the bost markets, with trans Donation cost averaging but I'.O per rar for cattle and sheep, are features of much Import In getting a balance on the right aide of the ledger. "Billy" Also Thrives. Besides cattle, sheep and hogs, a branch of the livestock business which Is now i-ouipelling the atten tion ot farmer.. bre is the Angora J goal Industry. "Billy" tbrlv lu this section to a wonderful degree. He has proved to be one of the most profitable of all farm animals, tie turns brush land Into good pasture and fertilizes It. He will clip from four to five pounds of mohair an nually, which brings from 25 to 30 cents per pound. When young his carcass makes fine mutton and his hide will make a valuable rug. Poultry raising, especially turkeys, is another profitable proposition in the locality. Portland pays higher prices for eggs and poultry than any other city In the entire northwest, yet last year over 20,000,000 eggs and large quantities of poultry were shipped into Oregon. Being a natural grain growing country, feed can be produced abund antly and cheaply, and with pre vailing high prices for the product, there Is nothing to deter any one from taking up this branch of stock- raising. During the fall of 107 over 100,000 pounds of dressed tur keys were shipped from Oukland, more than from any other town In the northwest. Another Important feature of the industry In this section is the breed ing and distribution of thoroughbred stock. One local firm has at present over 400 head of tho finest Llmioln and Oxford Down sheep and the flock Is beaded by some recent lmportu tlons which captured all tho blue ribbons and championships at the recent Toronto lloyal Stock show and 'be Pacific National show at Port land. Another firm makes a busi ness of Importing and breeding An gora goats. Oakland Is also the home of three of tho best stallionB on the coast ine of which took the blue ribbon at the 108 Oregon state fair. NO TKAOK OK MIHKINO HOY. May Mending for Portland or May Have Met With Accident- Nothing yet haB been heard of R. Wendell Hell, the 16-year-old Bon of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. S. Hell, of this -Ity, who disappeared from Koseburg last Wednesday noon without leaving tny trace of his whereabouts. When .he boy left home at Pocatello, Idaho, ;olng to Seattle, about a year ago, he 'oft a note on his bedroom dresser nrnrming his parents of his destlnn lon and. besides, mailed home postnl ards at several stations enroute. This time, however, the Ind has sent to word of any kind to his parents, ind nnturnlly they feel much alarmed is to his Bafety. Mr. Hell Inclines to he theory that his Bon may have net with some mishap while either fathering mistletoe or hunting near own. Tho boy had stated that he night do one of those two things. 'Inscriptions of tho boy have been tent to the police In Portland, San icranclsco and Seattle There Is a probability that tho boy may be head ng for tho former city, where he hns i friend of about his own age, a foftu er schoolmate at Pocatello. Portland Telegram: The perman ent population of Portland and Ore gon was increased Saturday and to day by fully 1000. The exact fig ures are not available today, but the record of these two days Is a high water mark In the annals of colonist travel to this city and state. The reason for thlB remarkable Influx Is primarily, of course, the extremely low one-way rate offered to home- seekers from the enst and middle west. The big showAujf for the two days may In a mensure be accounted for by the fact that the fall season of the colonist tr utile for this year Is drawing to a close, no tickets being sold at eastern points after November 1st. When O. R. ft N. train No. 5 rolled Into the Union depot Saturday morning It waa made up of two sec tions, and every one of the 15 coaches was packed to the doors. Deducting the local business from the aggregate. It Js estimated that there were be tween 600 and 600 homeseekers on board, people who have come to Port land with the avowed purpose of making Oregon their permanent homes. Thin was considered a splen did showing, but when the same train (No. 6) pulled In at noon today It was again in two sections, compris ing 15 more coaches, and they were, If anything, more crowded than was Saturday's train. The total, therefore, for the two days was about 1100 homeseekers, and. it Is estimated that at least 90 per cent of the aggregate will settle In this state, and for the most part their destinations are Willamette river valley points, Salem, Albany, Eugene, McMinnvllle, Roseburg, Med- ford, Ashland, Grants Pass and other communities are drawing heavy from this great Inpourlng of new settlers. The Dalles, Hood River, Heppner, Ba ker City and Pendleton also gained a considerable number of new people, these dropping off on the way. It has been necessary to Increase the number of employes In the bag gage department at the union depot to handle tho personal effects of the new homeseekers, and It Is anticipat ed that for the next few days there will be an unusually large number of colonists who have put off coming to the Northwest until the last days of the low-rate season. In the fall season which Is now closing Oregon has drawn heavily from North and South Dakota, Min nesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and 11 linois. Of course, other states have sent their usual quota, but the Mid die western states have furnished the bulk of the new population. How is Your Digestion. Mrs. Mary Dowllng, of No. 388 8th Ave., San. Francisco, recommends a remedy for stomach trouble. She says: "Gratitude for the wonderful effect of Electric Bitters in a case of acute Indigestion, prompts this tes timonial.
