Mack, of the Democratic national committee,' claims New York, In diana, New JerHcy, Ohio, West Vir ginia and Rhode Island. The Demo crats also declare they can win with out the Kmplre stato. Figures many and voluminous are given to substantiate Mack's state ment.. New. Jersey will give forty thousand plurality to Hrynn. Not a single electoral vote will go to the republicans in Indiana. Ilryan and Chanter In New York will win in a walk. Mack says his computation Ib based on a direct poll of the vot ors, reliable reports from congres sional districts, the word of state chairmen and the unbiased opinion of shrewd political judges. In view of the republicans' state ment, to be issued Mondny, wise politicians are refraining from com ment upon the Democratic forecast of tonight. lAthrop (lives Huinmnry. CHICAGO, Oct. 24. Swooping the country in a summarizing rovlew of the political conditions, one Is forced to assert that 1908 seems determined to repeat Its performance of 1892 by electing a democratic president. Ev ery significant change In sentiment ' among the several natural divisions of voters Indicates such a strong drift towards Uryan that success on No vember 3 would seem to be a good bet. It 1b the period of the straw votes, when In a given stato, casting millions of votes, nowsiiaiiers send out poBtnl cardB and get retuniR from say 3000 voters, or one In every 3, '10 who vote, therofrom predicate guosses as to the mini result. This has been done by the New York World, the Cincinnati Knqulr r, St. Louis Republic and Chicago Hocord-llernld, all covering practical ly evory northern statu east of the Hockles. Disregarding territorial comments on printed result these polls, stating them without permitting "wish to be father to tho thought," as 1 serloiiHly tried to do during tho past throe days, I can't see any conclusion other than that Intelligent betting would back Bryan for tho presidency. Not Correct Basis. In the first place, tho 1904 vote Is not a correct basis for estimating. In mnny states Koosevelt carried the commonwealths with nn Immense plurality, while at the same time the total republican vote is much less than In 1900 and the democratic vote Is so small thnt It is represented on ly by a bodygunrd of democrats who wont to tho polls. The 1800 vote, then, Is a propor basis for comparison. For Instnnce. Missouri In 1904 gnvo Hoosevelt a majority, yet tho voto showed thai 1 26,000 democrats remained nt home. Several business men undertook to get a lino on tho situation by com municating with hundredB of cus tomers In all the northern states, the rottirns being tho customer's ob servations in hlB region. These re turns aro compreheuslvo and ap parently non-partlHnn nnd Indicate that Indiana, Ohio, Maryland and Now York aro democratic, with Illi nois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Kansas, Houth Dakotn. West Virginia. Con necticut and New Jersey doubtful, fn varying degrees. Nebraska, perhaps, should bo plac ed lu the llrynn column; also Mon tana, Idaho, Colorado and Wyoming The handlrap of rnmpnrlsnn with 1904, with its popular plurality for Koosnvelt of 2.54u,ul !. melts awny when 1900 Is taken, with' only a plur ality for McKlnley of 849.790. which carry tho proof of the "stay at home" vote by showing a total vote In 1900 of about 14.000.(100. with onlv about 13.600.000 In 1904, when It should bnvo given a large lucreaw over 1900. Nationally, Ilryan has to change 426.000 votes from 1900 to win. or S per cent of the popular vote. The south, with Nevada and Oklahoma, will give him 161 electoral voles, ad ding 77 for New York. Indiana and Ohio, a total of 238 is reached, ot on ly four less than the 24 2 necessary to give a majority of 483 electoral votes. I find It difficult to locnte the man who claims that In all the sweep of north and west, will not be other electoral votes for Ilryan than those three states named. New York. In diana and Ohio. In fart. Mr. Hitch cock has practically conceded Mon tana, Colorado and Wyoming. Re publicans admit grave doubts as to Nebraska, Idaho. Wisconsin. West Virginia, Kansas. Connecticut, or a total of 59 votes concededly doubt ful, with fighting chances In several other states. South Dakota and Inwn. This pan's It down to a safe showing on a basis of actual conditions now existing. It gives Bryan the election. Hcmv and Money. This will be printed nine days he fore election. During that time on ly two things will be depended on to swing the results to Taft scare and money.
