on business, after an absence of 18
months. He is employed in the U.
S. forestry service, being located in
the Cascade reserve about 40 miles
east of Eugene.

of Arthur and Walter Piekthorn,
formerly employed in the Southern
Pacific depot in this city, died at her
home in Portland last Tuesday, aged
43 years. She visited here with her

her husband, she is survived by three
children.

Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Perkins re
turned from Portland this morning.
While there Mr. Perkins arranged for
the publication of the fine new book
lets for the Sutherlln Land and Wa
ter Co. These booklets are to be
printed in three colors on the finest
enamelled paper and freely illustrat
ed with photographic views of Suth
erlln valley and other Douglas coun
ty scenes. Doubtless they will con
stitute the finest piece of advertising
literature ever yet published In be
half of Douglas county. Mr. Per
kins states that sales of tracts of
land in the Sutherlln valley are now
being made dally, although their
plats are not yet completed. He has
already arranged for 10 or 15 agen
cies throughout the country for in
teresting people in Douglns county
lands, and directing their special at
tention to the advantages offered In
Sutherlln vnlley. Mr. Andrews, a
member of tills company, lenves in
a few days for the east, to further
make these advantages known to
homeseekers. all of which will doubt
less result in many people coming
here to plant orchards and build
homes.

Dr. H. J. Houghton died In San
Francisco, Oct. 20, 1908, aged 78
years. Dr. Houghton wns a pioneer
resident or this county, having lived
at Oakland many years ago. For a
number of years past he lived in San
Francisco. Ho wns distantly related
to the Mahoney family ,of Oakland

rant ever issued by a clerk of Doug
las County was received from Clerk
E. 11. Lenox today by "11111" Bradley,
tbo lone resident of Caps lllihe, near
the headwaters of the North t'lltpquo
river. 70 miles east of here, llradley
presented to the county clerk the
scalps of 37 coyotes and wolves,
which, at J10 apiece, brought him n
total bounty of $:170. All of the ani
mals were slain by llradley between
Aug. 15 nnd Oct. 10, of this year.
Some he poisoned, other he trapped
while the remainder he shot after
they had been bnyed by his Hue Eng
lish bloodhound.
