HEADY FOR LAND ItUHll.
Monday Witnesses Opening on Hose,
bud Reservation In H. 1. ..
DALLAS. 8. D., Oct. 17. At 4:30
o'clock this afternoon the reglstra
tlon of chances In Uncle gam's great
lottery for lands in the Rosebud reB-
ervation comes to a close, -and on
Monday the "Wheel of fortune will be
gin to revolve merrily, bringing Joy
to a few and disappointment to thou
sands. Today was the final period for reg
istration, and the land hungry who
desire homes on Rosebud's rich acres
took full advantage of the fact. All
night and all day .tomorrow the land
office officials from Washington will
work unceasingly preparing the stago
setting for Monday's great drama,
"The Land Lottery.". Nor will the
drama lack an entlisuiastlc End ex
cited audience,. Thousands. of people
are. gathered here and at the other
registration points,, living In hastily
improvised, shacks, tents and pruirle
schooners, awaiting with nervous and
feverish, impatience the whirring of
the wheel that may spell for them
the magic. iword, "home.""
While .a vast nmjorlly of the land
seekers are legitimate setlors, actu
ated by the honest Impulse to secure
a home for themselves and families
and wrest-a living from the virgin
soil; there 'are not lacking adventur
ers, gamblorB and fakirs who have
been attracted 'by the 'opportunity to
"take a chance" and possibly to pick
up a little "easy money." . Dallas,
only a short time ago the merest
speck of the map of South Dakota,
has become B great aweltorlng mnss
of eager, -hungry humanity, repre
senting -every strata of society.
The wheel to bo used In Monday's
land lottery Is- very similar to those
once operatod by the Louisiana lot
tery Company, which camo under the
ban of the United Htntes government.
HepreBentatlves of the government
draw the numbers from tlio revolving
wheel.
The first number drawn out en
titles the holder to his choice of any
one of the 160-s.cro tracts In the
broad Tripp reservation. Tho first
prize Is a jim-dnnily and thousands of
others are just as good. All are dis
tributed ' according to the order In
which they are drawn.
Tho land Is not distributed abso
lutely free. Each lucky man or wo
man must pay $6 per acre for his
tract ,and live upon It 14 months, as
provided by the homestead laws.
Tripp county Is more thnn a coun
ty, as one would be nccuHtomed to
regard it. It comprises nearly
million, or 938.000 acres. It is the
county directly west of tho land open
ed in 1904, tho drawing of which was
generally known as tho llonesteol
drawing. The development of the
lands which wore opened bornre,
shows tho value of tho lands Includ
ed in tho present opening. The
farms have been developed and the
occupants havo prospered. Tho qunr
tor sections which wore drawn, und
were purchased at J 4 an acre, are
worth upwardB of 130 nn acre, nnd
some of them ns high as Ii0 nn
acre. Tripp county has not hnd
much Identity until now. It has
bocn only a part of the great Itosn-
bur reservation, the homo of the
Bioux Indians. . .
