Although he expressed his detes ntlon of slavery in the historic de late ut Alton .'id years ago, Lincoln lid not deny its constitutionality. He was never an extreme abolitionist. Ho believed that the extension of .lavery should bo prevented, that tho institution should bo contlned to hat part of tho United States where, n It then existed until nieaiis could je devised for Its ultlmato extinc tion without despoiling tho property rights of the slave-holders, in the blacks. Ills opponent, Stephen A. Douglas, was a native of Vermont, who had settled In Chicago, lie had been on tho Illinois Supremo I'ourt bench, lie had represented Illinois for two terms in the It tilted States senate, and dining his scnatorBhlp, In ltiiM, '10 Introduced the Kansas-Nebrnska bill, which repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1X20. He was one of the most udrolt debaters In tho land, and no less a patriot, though the presidential bee had long buxzed In his bonnet, llo was a cundidato for re-eletiUin ill 1858. Lincoln's political enreer up to the beginning of the debntes with Douglas wns contlned to six years In the Illinois legiBlntnro and one term ill tho lower house of Con- irroHs. to which office be wns elected from Illinois in 1840. Ho did not seek the office again, Olid was a somewhat obscure lawyer In Spring Held. 111., from 1849 to 1854, when he again entered the political arena because of his antagonism to thu re peal of the Missouri Compromise. Kxtension of . slavery was the burning Issuo in politics in 1858, and tho trend of northern opinion was against it. The "Little Giant" took n middle view of the situation. He believed that the people of a new territory or a state had tho right to determine for themselves whether slnvery should exist in any part of the United States. Opposed to him was the vlrutally untried Lincoln. I wncn me campnign was over it waB seen that a majority of Lin coln's suporters hnd been elected to the legislature, but the hold-over Democrnts In that body added to the newly olectod ones wero numerl-v . ally strong enough to elect Douglas.
