PENDLETON, Or., Oct. 10.
Answering the attack of Governor
Hughcu on Mr. Bryuu, as echoed by
Ht-nutor Heverldge in Portland last
Tuesday, Senator Uearln this even
ing at the courthouse showed that
the Bryan policies, which were to
work wreck and ruin to this country,
had In most instances the suport of
the republican platform in Its appar
ent reading and in every Instance the
Indorsement of the republicans.
Senator Uearln addressed the
crowded courtroom for two hours
and held intense Interest throughout
his discussion. The audience was
composed mainly of working people
and his references to the bank de
posit guaranty were cheered to the
echo b ylhose whose savings had
been tied up by the panic. of the re
publican administration.
Mr. (iearln declared and showed
that, from the utterances of the
republican platform the only ltryan
policy the republicans feared was the
ghost of blmetalism, and he read the
plank of the Oregon republican party
In 1890, declaring unequivocally for
free silver.
When I appear at the mourners'
bench," he declared, "I expect to be
met, first by Charles Fulton and next
hy Jonathan Hourne, leading a brass
band and with both hands pounding
the bass drum."
Almost every mention of Rryan's
name was greeted with cheers. Thus
far local democrats have manifested
far more enthusiasm than the re
publicans.

appropriations, aggregating a total
of $3,000,000 to meet Immediate de

ing resolution was adopted:
"After hearing the governments
explanation of the failure to declare
war aguinst Austria, parliament ex

Despite active preparations for
war, there Is a quieter feeling among
the populace today. This Is due to
the realization that Servla Is not pre

Game of TravaMng.
Did you ever play a game called trav
eling? It Is both Instructive and amus
ing. The leader seats himself at the
center of the ring and says. 'l went to
Philadelphia, where I saw a statue.'
lie points to one of the players and
waits one minute for the answer. The
oue pointed to must name some famous
statue, as "William Penn." "Benjamin
Franklin," "George Washington," etc.
If the lender says, "I saw some fumous
landmarks," aud points to a player, tbe
one pointed to must be ready with his
answer, "Betsy Ross bouse," "luue-
peudence hall." "William Peun's
house," "Mint. etc. Ir he says some
famous object, the player must answer
promptly. "Liberty bell," "Declaration
of Independence," "Penn treaty mou

give a forfeit
Caring For the Eyes.
Never read with your bead down
Always sit up as straight as possible.
It Is easy to find a comfortable posi
tion without leaning forward. If you
lean forward, with your bead hanging
down or Inclined forward, more blood
will flow Into your eyes than will be
good for them. Don t read facing a
light. Let the light come over one of
your shoulders, preferably the left, be
cause then tbe hands are never In tbe
way of tbe light, either In readlug or
tn wrltlug. Never read In bed. Sooner
later thut would seriously affect
your sight. Besides, you should not go
to bed until tbe time has come to go
to sleep. Always stop reading when
your eyes feel tired, especially at night
If It Is necessary that you should use
your eyes at night, give tbem rest
often. Chicago News.
