Because you have contracted or dinary colds and recovered from them without treatment of any kind, do not for a moment Imagine that colds are not dungerous. Everyone knows that pneumonia and chrohit catarrh have their origin In a com in on cold. Consumption Ih not caus ed by a cold but the cold prepare the system for the reception and de velopment of the germs that would not otherwise have found lodgment. It Is the same with all infectious diseases. Diphtheria, scarlet fever measles and whooping cough arc much more likely to bo contracted when the child has a cold. You will see from tills that more real danger lurks In a cold than In any othei of the common ailments. The splendid remodelled structure of the First Christian church of this city was taxed to Its utmost capacity yesterday when Rev. S. M. Martin, evangelist, of Seattle, Wash., com menced his series of revival services. Yesterday was a red letter day for the church. The attendance at the Sunday school in the morning was 152, collections $8.33. The morning sermon was devllered by (evangelist .Martin on the sub ject of Sunday school work, which he reviewed from the time of Ho hurt Italkes in 1780 up to the present time. In the afternoon at 2:30, Mrs. G. S. O. Humbert addressed a large and appreciative audience on missionary work, tu which she Is es pecially interested. In the evening the new auditorium room of the church, which Is the largest In the city, was again tilled when Evangelist Martin began his real work of the present protracted meetings. He took as his subject the command of Moses to the Israelites when they had stop ped at the brink of the Red Sea and were commanded to go forward. . At the conclusion of the address llo Stephens was baptized. Evan gelist Martin Will 'continue the serv ices so auspiciously begun, speaking again tonight at the Christian hureh. Evangelist Martin Is one ol 'he foremoHt evangelists of the Pa- :lflc const and everyone should hear him. XX. or :i:t Afflicted With Sure Kyvn Yeat'M. Lincoln, Neb., Oct. 3. In yesterday's Omaha Bee, a rad ical Republican organ, published by Victor Itosewuter, member of the Re publican Kxecutlve committee, and head of the republican publicity bu reau, was an editorial criticising an extract from the supiosed speech of Mr. ltryan on the tariff guest ion. The words compluined of in the edi torial were: "in all tariff legislation the true principle Is best maintained by the imposition of such duties as wlil equal the difference between the coat of production at home and abroad, together Willi reasonable profit to Ameridiu industries." Taft IMutform. In regard to this the Dee said edi torially: "Nothing prettier in the catch-all line has been offered In this campaign. The most hidebound standpatter In the country cun ac cept that as satisfactory and the rank free trader can find delight in It. The declaration means nothing. An attempt to legislate along that line would simply open the way to intermluate wrangling as to what constitutes "a reasonable profit,' for hair-splitting on wages In one Indus try, price of raw material In another. rebates and drawbacks in a third and ! so on through. the lists of thousands of articles that are now on the tariff lists. Under such a proposition, an attempt at tariff revision, ut Bryan's direction, would serve only to halt Industrial and commercial progress and keep business unsettled dur ing tils term of office. " The words complained of are not a part of any speech of Mr. Bryan's, but a part of the trust plank of the republican platform. Bryan Approves, When Mr. Bryan's attention was called to the editorial, he said: "I am much surprised that Mr. Itosewuter, who is the editor of the Bee," nnd also a member of the executive committee of the republi can national committee and the head f the bureau of publicity, should have attempted to misrepresent my position. To accuse me of using the language of the republican platform h an outrage. "Mr. Kosewater Is right, however, In making fun of the language. He is right In saying 'Nothing prettier n the catch-all line has been offered in this campaign.' He is also right ii saying that 'the most hidebound standpatter In tho country cun nccept hat hh satisfactory and the rank free trader can find delight in it.' Hardly 10 peeled It. "He Is right again In saying thnt 'the declaration means simply noth ing.' and again is right in saying that 'an attempt to legislate along that line would simply open the way (o Interminable wrangling ns to what constitutes reasonable profit, for hair splitting on wages in one Industry, price of raw materials iu another, and rebates and drnwbacks In a third and so on through the list of thous ands of articles that are now on the tariff lists.' "But 1 hnrdly expected from him -to frank a confession as Is contained iu the last sentence of his editorial Under such n proposition an attempt at tariff revision would serve to halt Industrial progress and keep busi ness unsettled during his term of ollice.' "This is a rich find. It shows how absurd (he republican platform looks to a republican when the republican has a chance to took nt It in a disln terested way. When Mr. Kosewater thought that the language quoted was taken from n speech of mine, he could see how ridiculous the lang uage Is. I hope that his opinion of the language will not. change when he finds that he was shooting at his own party. He expects to begin the work early 'WSt spring. MARKS ASTONISHING Cl'RKS. Mi-o-na TabtftN Cure Iysprpsla by 1 Tom l I y ifetimviiig the Cause, or Money Hack. Dtf $.7C1CC,'.M30 V: " CRAFTED Representative Lloyd. Shows How tho Congrt Cave Itatl roads That Sum Improperly. Representative Jumes T. Lloyd, of Missouri, chairman of the Democratic ; national congressional coiun.ittee, on March 10, 11KJS, exposed the flagrant theft of the people's money through j the unfair weighing of mulls when of- flclal tests were made to determine hat compensation the railroads should receive. He said: 'Mr. Chairman, n delirerlng my ad- ! dress a few days since on pontal con ditions, in discussing the Interpreta tion of the law as to the weighing of the mail, I failed to sta'e the law on the subject, and I wish to do so now: 4 The average weight to be ascer tained. In every case, by the actual weighing of the mails for such; a num ber of successive working days, not less than thirty, at such times aTer June 30, 1873, and not less frequently tii an once in every four years. .,, "Later the time was changed to ninety days. Otherwise the law baa not beeti changed to this date. : "Until Mrfrcb 2. 1DG7. the depart ment required the mai to be weighed for ninety days. Sunday was not con sidered, so that the weighing covered a period of one hundred and live days Instead of ninety successive days. In other words, working days were con strued to mean week days. ro-tm as ter General Cortelyou changed th a In terpretation which had been accept c.l as correct for over thirty years and Issued the following order as his con struction of the law: i " 'That when the weight of mail Is taken on railroad routes, the whole number of days the mails are weighed . shall be used as a divisor for oUtalu lug the average weight per day. 1 "This mi u I red In efi'c ct, that. In stead of dividing the number of work ing or week days In the weighing period, the devisor should be the num ber of days on which mall was actual ly carried during the period. If it was weighed one hundred and Ave days, the divisor to obtain the daily weight was one hundred and live. If the mail was not carried on Sundny. the divisor would be ninety. Th's. as you can readily see, would give less compensation for carrying the full week than for six days, for the ac cumulated mall would be practically the saute whether carried In six days or in seven. 'The present postmnstcr general, seeing this predicament. Issued n t'other order of construction, known as 'order 412 which Is as follows: " That when the weight ef mall Is taken ou railroad routes the whole number of days liu-hul -il In the weigh ing period shall be used as a divisor for obtuluing the average weight per day.' "If the construction up to last year was right, then there has been with held from the railroads this year over 9l.7UO.OOU thnt Is theirs under the law. If the present construction Is the prop er one. the rnilronds have received over $70,000,000 since 1SS0 that be longs to the people; so that whichever view Is sustained money has been wrongfully withheld through the post otllce department." lvalue Hack.
