Milk will also ex tinguish burning oil. Baud or earth or common salt are useful aids to fire lighting. The contents of au ordinary tlowcrpot will stop the spread of the flames of oil. How to Clean Black Laco. Dlack lace should not be washed un less It is decidedly dirty, but should be well shaken to remove as much dust as Is possible and then dipped In a solu tion of deep blue gum water. When the lace has become dirty and browu lsh In color, the best plan la to wash It In soapsuds and then rinso and stiiTeu It in deep blue water to which the gum water has beeu added. The deep blue water will help to restore the lace to its original black. The lace should be ull rolled In an old cloth for a short time and then pinned out with the cloth between it and 'the stteet. as It Imparts a blue stain which It would be necessary to remove from the sheet. When the lace is (pllte dry remove tho pins and place a piece of tissue paper over it. Iron It with the pnpor be tween It oud the Iron. If the iron Is placed directly on the lace It will leave a gloss on It which Is not pretty and which stamps It as washed lace. How to Clean Velveteen. The method employed to clean light and dark velveteen Is a simple one. A lather of white soap is made, into which the velveteen Is dipped, then placed on n board or table and scrubbed the way of the pile with a clean nailbrush iiulll all dirt has been removed, when It Is rinsed in clean cold water, but not speezed or wrung, ns this would spoil the pile. It is dried In the air, and sometimes the back is drawn over a hot Iron, but this Is not absolutely necessary. Light velvets are cleaned by gently rubbing with a flannel previously dipped lu kerosene or. If the malcrla! bo soiled In sHt8 only, by rubbing with a piece of fnt bacon or butter, when the wrong side requires drawing over a hot Iron in order to raise (lie pile. How to Keep Youthful. A running horse race between Joe Rose's "Blue Diamond" and Ike Win nlngham's sorrel colt, for J 1 00 a side, is scheduled to take place at tho District Fair grounds next Tues day afternoon.
