The book opens with the arrival lu New York of a beautiful girl widow, Lucy THifree. whose early borne ad joint) tbe pliintiitlon of the Montagues, who are already established In tbe smart net. Tbe second night after ber arrival he Is luvlled to a dinner with I lie Montagues and there meets Btnuley Ityde.'. pre.di.LMit of the Gotham Trust company, the original of wbom wns the bead of a great financial Institution who some time ago committed aukide. Lmy Ik much surprised to learn from Allan Montague that Hyder Is a great speculator, her Idea of a bank presl dent calling for a most conservative man. The hook continues: "Lucy was silent, a little staggered at the remark. 'I am told Montague added, with a smile, 'that even Hyder's wife won't keep ber money lu the I .odium Trust.' "Montague had not anticipated the effect of this remark. Lucy gave a sud den start. 'Ills wife!' she exclaimed. " 'Why, yes, said Montague. 'Didn't you know that he was married?' "'No,' said Lucy lu a low voice. ' did not.' " Later Oliver Montague, who Is an other character, tells his brother Allan that Ktauley Ityder is going after Lucy, The hook says: "Montague stood for some time, lost In somber thought. 'I dou't think It will do hhu much good,' he cald. 'Lucy knows too much.' "'Lucy bas never met n man like Stau.cy Uyd.r, declared the other. 'He has spent all bis life bunting wo men, and blie lb no match for him at all ' " There Is much lu the hook about (au Waterm in. Itcadcru will Instant ly recognize him us the greatest pow er In Wall street, but I'ptou Kluclalr pictures him as the vilest of scoun drels, lie lu described as tbe man who can make or break the stock market, who controls bauks, who has the treas ury department In Washington at his heck and c.ill. who organized a great trust and has wonderful urt collections and a superlatively Due steam yacht, lie Invited Lucy Uupree or Mrs. Tay lor for a sail on bis yacht. It was nec essary for Allau Montague to see Lucy Dupree. v hose lawyer be was, on an Important business matter, and be hoarded the vacht off tbe Battery to see her fur a few minutes. An olHcer told him Mrs. Taylor was ou board and hud left word for him. The hook then rays: "Montague had beguu to ascend, but a half second later bo stopped nhort In consternation. "Through one of the portholes of tbe vessel he heard distinctly a m u tiled cry, 'Help! Help!' "And he reco ilzed the voice. It was Lucy's! "Moutai ne hesitated only an Instant. He spui'ig up to the deck. "At tlie foot of the stall's be found himself in a broad entrance hall, light ed by a glass dome above. He sprang toward a dtnir which opened In the di rection of the cry he had heard and shouted aloud. 'Lucy! Lucy! Ho heard her answer K-yond the doorway, and he seized the knot) uud tried It. The door was locked. " 'Open the door! he shouted. "There w as "no sound. 'Open t'.ie door!' he called again, 'or I'll break It down.' "Suiting his action to the word, he , lluug his weight upon It. Tbe Wirrier cracked, nnd then suddenly he heard n mini's voice: 'All right. Walt.' ! "Montague escorted Mr. Taylor up to the deck after she was released from the room. The ottker was still stand i lug lu perplexity. I " 'Mrs. Taylor wishes to go ashore,' said Montngue. 'Will you get us r boat?' "'I told you how I met Waterman at W art gallery. said Lucy. 'Mr. lavld Aldei, took me. and the old man wan so polite and so dtgultled--why. I never had the slightest Idea! Ami then he wrote me n little note- In his own hand, mind you -Inviting me to 1e one of a party for the ftrt trip of the HrnnnhUde. Of course I thought It wni Hit right. I told you I wai going, you1 know, and you dldu't have any objec tions either. "'1 went down there, and the launch met me and took me on board, and a Wward took tue down luto that room and left in. and a second later the old uuun himself came lu. And be shut the door behind blui and locked It! "'"How do you do. Mrs. Taylor?" he said, uud before I bad a chance even to open my mouth and reply be came to me and calmly put bis urms around me. "'"Mr. Waterman," I said, "1 want you to release me.' I love you,' be said. " 'I remember bis going on like that tor some time. And, fancy, there 1 was! I might as well have been In the grip of a bear. You would not think It, you kuow, but be Is terribly strong. could nut more. 1 could hardly think. I was suffocated, and all tbe time I could feel his breath on my face, and be was glaring into my eyes like some terrible wild beast " "Mr. Waterman,' 1 protested, "I am not used to being treated In this way." " ' "I know; 1 know." he said. "If you were I should not want you. Hut I am different from other men. Think of It think of all that 1 have on my hands. I have no time to make love to women. But I love you; I loved you the minute 1 saw you. Is not that enough? What more can you ask? You know the world. You are no spring chicken.'' "'And then 1 began to struggle again. I shouted once or twice I ain not sure and then he clapped his hand over my mouth. Then I began to fight for my life. 1 really believe 1 would have scratched tbe old creature's eyes out If he had not beard you out lu the hall. Lucy Dupree wants to have Dan Wa terman arrested and punished. She Is told she would bo simply branded as an adventuress. She Is also told of an other multimillionaire, now dead, ns follows: "There's an old man lu this town who bas spent his lifetime lending money nnd hoarding it. He has some thing like eighty or a hundred millions now, 1 believe, nnd once every six months or so you will read In tbe newspapers that some woman has made nn attempt to blackmail him. That Is because be does to every pretty girl who conies luto his otllce Just ex actly what old Waterman did to you, and those who are arrested for black mull are simply the ones who are so unwise as to make a disturbance." Lucy Dupree still Insists that tbe man I' punished, and she Is told: "You must realize the situation. This mau Is a god In New York. He controls all the avenues of wealth; he can make or break any person be chooKCH. It Is really the truth. I be lieve he could ruin any man In the city whom he chose to set out after. He can have anything that he wants done so far as the police are concerned. It Is simply n matter of paying them And be Is accustomed to rule In every thing. His slightest whim Is taw. If he wants a thing he buys It, and that Is his attitude toward women." The panic of last October Is dealt with In tbe book, and the three men. the owners of chains of batiks who were crushed, are described with stimll pains to conceal the Identities of the originals. The book sajs: "There was Ktewart, the youug Loch Invar out of the west. He had tried to buy tbe Trust Company of the Republic long ago. and so the general knew him and his methods. He had fought tbe copier trust to a standstill In Montana. The trust bad bought up tbe legislature and Imtli political ma chines, but Cmnmtngs had appealed to the public In a series of sensational campaigns and had got bis Judges luto otllce, uud In the end the trust had been forced to buy him out. And there was Cu minings, the Ice king, who for years had fluauced the political ma chine In the city nnd by se-'urlug a monopoly of the docking privileges had forced all his rlvaU to the wall. "He had set out to monopolize the coastwise steamship tntde of the couu try and had bought Hue after Hue of vessels by this same device of 'pyra miding,' aud now, finding that he need ed still more money to buy out bis rivals, he had purchased or started a dozen or so of trust companies and banks." The steel trust and the Mississippi Steel company, which Is the Tennessee Coal and Iron company, are the dis guised tlgures In the novel, ns ore also the past and present presidents of tbe former aud the bushwhacking specu lators who controlled the latter. The former owner of the chief subsidiary company of the steel trust Is pictured as a man who pal mini off rotten armor plate on the government. According to Sinclair's lunik tbe panic of October was brought on by "Water man" to break "Ityder" aud the lat ter't company, the Gotham Trust com pany, so as to put Lucy Dupree at his mercy. All of her money wns In tbe trust company, nnd she held Ryder's note for $H0.tH0 for ratlro.ul sbn-k. In herited from ber father, which she had sold him. "Waterman" also brought on the panic so he cm Id have nil ex cuse for taking over the Mississippi Steel company. LOCAL NEWS. It. W. Long was over from Yon calla on business today.
