Fishing on the upper Columbia ceas ed at noon on August 25 In accord ance wllh tho old law which requires llshlng to cease until noon of Sep tember 10. The new fish law passed under the Initiative last June, which prohibits llshlng on the Columbia above tho Juncture of tho Sandv riv er went Into effect on August 25. some or tho local fishermen seem to be or the opinion that as they have paid a license to llsh for one year, from March 31, mils, to March 31. l'JOII. the state cannot tmss another law rescinding the first law, especially as they have paid for their right. Accordingly, some of the llshermen contend they will have the right to llsh until Ihelr license ex pires next March, subject, however, lo the closed periods under the old law. In case of an arrest for a vio lation of Ihu new law this would bring up n complex legal iiuestieu. As under the new law up-river llshermen are shut oft from tlshing. and as many or the lower fishermen aro very much dissatisfied with the last llsh law passed under the ini tiative, prospects are that there will be an attempt to resume llshlng by some of the dlssal Istled upper and lower llshermen. In this case the matter will be threshed out In the courts. TEA Linger longer over it; let it be steaming hot from' the earthen pot; and the loveliest woman pour it. At any rate, the bnchelors I know are. I dined with one not long ago. Dur ing the first part of the meal he seem ed uneasy. "'If any of my friends see me,' he said, "they will think I am dining with some other man's wife.' "'Why?' 1 asked. "He pointed to my wedding ring. "Bhull I take It oft?' I asked. "'Would you uilndV said he. '"Not at all,' I said and slipped off tho ring. "Since then when going anywhere with that bachelor or any other bache lor I save him from embarrassment by taking off my wedding ring before we start. I find they appreciate my consideration for their feelings. Now, If that Isn't sensitiveness raised to the ninth power I'd like to know what it Is." New York Press. - The Flow of Rivers, The flow of rivers, as might be sup posed, Is the slowest at the bottom of the water and highest nt the top. The average velocity of the eutlro stream Is found, as a rule, at about, six-tenths of tho depth. Tho friction of the bot tom which rctnrds tho movement of the deepest wnter Is much greater, rel atively to tho whole volume of tho stream, In a shallow river thau In a deep ue. Womanlike. "Iu my opinion," Bald Jones, "a wo man's club to be successful should aim nt something far removed from fe male suffrage." "1 do uot agree with 3011," retorted .Miss Strong, with set lip. "That alone should bo Its object." "Exactly, but If It alms at something else It Is more likely to hit that." Phil adelphia Press. Looking Backward. "Some pcuple have queer Ideas of sentiment."
