(ill Agents for the Red Cross Shoe CLEVELAND. The hint issue of Collier'.. Week I has aa article by Jesse Lynch Wil liams on "Grover Cleveland," which ought to do something toward soft ening the hostility of many toward this great, rtiKKfd. misunderstood and lovable giant. It Is an Intimate, kindly and sympathetic sketch of The President's personal character and private life. it presents the democratic side of the reat demo crat, it reminds one of a great ele phant disporting. The Incident of this renowned and august personage who twice filled the exalted office of President of the United States, spend ing a laborious hour to make hln boy a whistle; his solicitude for a little girl who seemed to be travel ing alone; his thoughtful strategems to assist a poor undergraduate: how gentle and lovable these little touches make the private character of this great man appear. Only the truly great can be truly gentle. It requires a certain amount of greatness of character to appreciate greatness. The toad s highest con ception of beauty is his toadess Ueauty Is partly in him who sees it, There are little minds which can never rightly estimate great charac ter. "Great men," says Emerson, are always misunderstood. Mr. Cleveland has not escaped the pen alty of greatness. How the little dogs barked and snapped at him as he shouldered his way up from obscur ity to renown! No public man has ever been more content than has Mr. Cleveland. Ills traducers have not been content with assailing his pub lic life. They have Invaded his home life nnd sprinkled the blood of as sassinated reputation on the lintels of his door posts. Hut in nothing, I think, does the greatness of the man appear than In this: Vhen the little dogs barked at him he never got down on all fours and barked back at them. The weakest forces in na ture are manifested in thunder. Her monarch energies are silent and Btib- dued. They saw wood and say noth ing. And I know of no more accur ate criterion of a great and noble mind than that silent confidence, thnt unfaltering faith in its own rec titude, that In the midst of the hos tile multitude maintains with perfect serenity t lie independence of soli tude, and conscious of the Itftlness of Its purposes, presses on to their achievement and leaves the vindlcn: tlon of the event to time. Repudiated by his own party, standing as It were 'between the devil nnd the deep sea, thnt Is be tween hostile republicans on the one hand and offended democrats on the other, Mr. Cleveland has been the target for the most bitter and vin dictive criticism. A character not made of granite would have been .lusted long ago. Hut like Mllton'B Abdlel, he stood before the storm, "unmoved, unshaken, unseduced. u li ter r Hied. Nor number nor example with him wrought to swerve from truth or change his constant mind. Krom amidst them forth he passed, long way through hostile scorn, which he sustained superior, nor of violence feared aught." There is that in Mr. Cleveland that reminds us of the granite strength. u ml ut same time gentle wlnsonie noss, of Mr. Lincoln. He had in him the unyielding rectitude of rocks. am) nt the same time the loving kind ness of the wayside well. He had lu him the tang and fiber of primal things. He will endure. His place in history, though not as large nor as luminous as (hat of Washington, or Jefferson, or Lincoln, Is nevertheless secure. As Webster, dying, said "I still live." so Mr. Cleveland, In tak ing leave of the world, might have done so with equal propriety and pro phetic vision in the words of Horace "Non omuis morinr" "I shall not wholly perish." The Jeweler at closing time was put ting his diamonds In a huge safe. "But why do you bother to do that when two watchmen walk the shop all night long?" "On account of fire," the Jeweler re plied.
