t'ANt'KR OF STOMACH? Ht-ports Coulllct as U Secretary of State Benson's uonaiuou. Roseburg readers of the Portland Telegram were startled this morn log uuuu seeing the announcement la glaring type that Prank W. lli-ii-son, secretary of Btate, now In Sun Francisco, must undergo an opera tion for cancer of the stomach, "as a last resort to save his life." In giving the source of Its Information the newspaper says: A close personal friend of Benson was In Portland Saturday and an nounced that a telegram was re ceived from the Bay City Friday con taining the announcement that pre parations were being made for an operation and that the chances for recovery were doubtful. That Mr. Benson's illness Is as Berlous, however, as the Item in the Telegram Indicates, Is disputed by the fciicring dispatch from San Francisco appearing in this morn ing's Oregonlan: " Secretary of State Benson, ol Oregon, has been slightly under the weather for the past few days, but haB not been seriously til or con lined to his rooms at the Hotel Au- dobon In this city. Several days ago according to one report, Mr. Ben son was not feeling well, but the last of the week he went to San Jose tc visit relatives and today returned to Ban Francisco. "Mr. Benson was at the theater this evening and did not return to the hotel until a late hour." To thlB cheering news, the Ore gonlan adds the following dispatch from Salem: The report which, was published here today that Secretary of State Benson Is dangerously 111 at San Francisco and that his life 1b despair ed of Is given an unqualified denial by Chief Clerk S. A. Kozer, of the Secretary's office. Mr. Kozer has been lh constant - communication with Mr. Benson dur ing the lattor's absence. Mr. Ben son has been taking a vacation and at the aanie time has received treat ment for a Bore on his nose which has given him trouble for several months, though not apparently of a Berlous nature. Today Mr. Kozer wired Mr. Benson of the report pub lished concerning his Illness and re ceived the following reply: "The report that I am Rerlously 111 or confined In a hospital Is with out any foundation." "F. W. BKNSON." Mr. Kozer says that he expects Mr. Benson home In about a week. Since his election as Secretary ol State two years ago, Mr. Benson hat been ill the greater part of the time. Shortly after he was sworn In hi was unable to attend to his duties and for many weeks the olllce was conducted by his brother, Judge Benson. At various times since, It has been necessury for the secretary of Btate to leave Salem for treat mnt, and Bhortly after the June elec tion he traveled to San Francisco, where he has remained. ODMitl Mix-lip Would Kiu.ii.'. Apprehension ub to the outcome of Mr. Benson's Illness leads The Tele gram to the following utterance: Should the operation full of Its purpose, the political sltuulion of Oregon, which Is now decidedly com plicated, will he even moro Involved. The death of Secretary Benson be fore the end of the coming legislat ive Besslon In January would Drill; about a number of changes In the po litical geography of the state. Next to the governor the Becretury of slatr Is the most Important official In Ore gon. A cord Inn to the statutes or Ore gon, the Secretary of Btate Is the suc cessor of the governor when the lat ter dies, resigns or leaves the olllce This Is of especinl linporlunci' wher It Is remembered thut (leorge K. Chamberlain, the governor, has re ceived the popular vote for I'lilled States senator and a ninjorlly of thf members of the IcKtlnture art pledged to elect Chamberlain In the senate. If the legislature elects Uovernor Chamberlain to the senate to succeed Charles V. Kullon, ttic secretary of state will heroine ncllnn governor until the following g nil election, giving the secretary of slati the powers unit goveraor and secre tary sjmI the salaries of both olllres. The elvettui of Chuirlaln woult moke Season the acting governor and give him two of the three votei in tho state board meeting, which means almost absolute control of Hie political patronage of the stale In stitutions and various and sundry up point merits. In the event of the decease 01 Benson before the convening of the legislature. Governor Chamberlain would have the appointing of a new secretary of stute to nil ine unei- uired term. If the governor appoint ed a deniocrut and was then himself elected to the senate, he would still leave Oregon with a democratic gov ernor, Providing tho secretary or stale held on until arter Chamberlain's promotion to the senate, and ther. died, tills would leave the two most linportunt positions In the Btate gov ernment vacant and Stale Treasurer Steel would have to conduct the gov ernor's olllce, the duties of the sec retary of slate and his own affairs as state treasurer, until on election could be held to till the vacancies regularly. The Information that Benson Is seriously III has set the politicians speculating on the possible changes which would occur as a consequence of the secretary or stnto'B death. The sltunllon at this particular time, anil until after the adjournment or the legislature. In muddled mid an ab rupt termination or Benson's career would be rar from clearing the atmosphere. We first noticed it on hia little handa. His hands were not as bad then, and we didn't think anything serious would result. But the next day we heard of the Cuticura Kennedies being bo good for itching sores, etc., that I thought I would get them. By thia time the disease had spread all over his body, and his hands were nothing but a solid mass of this itching disease. I went to the drug store and purchased a box of Cuticura Soap and one box of Cuticura Ointment, and that night I stripped my little boy and took the Cuticura Soap and lukewarm water and washed him well. Then I dried him with a soft bath towel, and took the Cuticura Ointment and rubbed him thoroughly with it. I did this every evening before I put him to bed and in three or four nights he was entirely cured. You have my permission to publish this because anybody who suf fered as my baby did ought to know of the Cuticura Remedies. I will surely and gladly recommend the Cuticura Remedies, for they are a godsend to all suffering with skin diseases. Mrs. Frank Donahue, 208 Fremont St., Kokomo, Ind., Sept. 10, 1907."
