Days of the political spellbinder
and the impassioned political writer
are at band. Voters will be told
that if tbey vote one way, they will
murve to death and the nation will
be lost, and In the next minute they
will be told by someone else that If
they do not vote the other way the
same starvation will face them and
the same fate overtake the nation.
The truth of the matter is, ioll
tlctana have been permitted to exag
, aerate - the Importance of their cal-
L linn and to exaggerate the Import
ance of the political position they
assume. The only thing for voters
to do is to do some thinking for
themselves. Voters should read and
latent patiently but act cautiously,
remembering that no politician Is
more ot an angel, to say the least of
. it, than other men, and Is no more
. inclined to work for the glory of
. humanity than the rest of us. Each
of them has an axe to grind, and
each is asking the common voter
. to turn the grindstone.
The voter must weigh what he
hears and think and act for himself.
If be hoes to act in the best way.
He should remember that In the
race for life, he has to t!t hit
chances along with others many ol
them with more time and opportun
ity to look out for the soft snapr
than he baa, while earning his dally
bread at the aweat of his brow, and
. if special favors are granted, he
must take his chances with all those
. fellows who do nothing but lie awake
nights to find out the best way !c
get most of the benefit. If the com
mon voter thinks he has an equa'
show with those fellowB, he will cas'
his vote accordingly, certain of thi
fact that the other fellow, even I'
he should get the best of It, is no'
going to kill the "goose that laic'
the olden egg."
Tf be believes that looking afte
the welfare of the high financier
and seeing that they get all thei
. want., assists him in getting alonr
. better, be certainly would vote fo'
the party that experience and Judg
ment tells him would look sfter tin
flnsneler. If he believe that th
- financier already has advantage
aufflclent over him and, rather thai
toavtng those advantages lncreasei'
by law should have some that he hi.
removed, he would certainly vol'
for that party which he bellew
would act accordingly.
At any rate he will decide whelh
er it is required of him to be a nhti
anthroplet and vote for what hi
. believes would be beat for every
body except himself, or be im In
