The main source of tho Invaslin Is the pnr tlcles of litter and inaiiure failing Into the milk at milking time. It is cuslomury everywhere to strain milk directly after mllklne. This is done for no other purpose than to remove litter and particles of manure from the milk. A single hair dropping from the cow Into the mttk, if soiled with manure, will carry with It from one to three thou sand germs, and a particle of man ure barely visible to the naked eye will carry proportionately more. When a cow Is affected with pulmon ary tuberculosis (consumption) In an advanced stage one or both lungs will be found to contain from a pint to a quart of yellow matter (pus) that sets up an Irritation causing the cow to cough. As she does not ex pectorate, the pus that Is coughed up Is swallowed, eventually passing out with the excreta. A quantity of pus equalling the size of a thimble will contain thousands and thous ands of the living tubercle bacilli. As the gastric fluids and dlgoRtlve tract of the cow do not kill the tub ercle bacilli they pass to the excreta, bedding and hair of the cow, thence Into the milk bucket and to the con sumer. The greatest contamination lien In the uncleanly methods of milking as commonly prnctlced. As a rule most milkers drink milk. If Ihny only could see each organism that they allow to get Into the milk while II Is being drnwn, they would surely adopt more sanitary methods. The tuberclo bnclllus measures ubout three' twenty-llve-thousandths of an Inch In lenglh and five ten-thousands of an inch In diameter. No strainer can remove such small bodies from milk, a id (he smallest pnrtlcle of excreta can concenl thousands of them. The tubercle bacilli usually grow slowly in the human body. Home linn's remaining fur long periods of time without developing, and yet re tain their vitality. Milk from ttiber culoilB cows Is especially dangerous for Infnuls, as tho organism may give rise to tubercular processes years afterwards. If tuberculosis de veloped quickly, ns diphtheria, scar let fever or smallpox the Bourro of Infection could be more easily trac ed, hut It does njt and for that rea son It Is not so much feared although more fatal. The amount of tuberculosis Hint exists Is perfectly alarming. It Is not confined to Ihe human race alone; cattle, hogs, Bhien ami noul- try aro afflicted with it, and the evi dence Hint we have pioves the 1II1 ease lo bu commuiilcnble. In this enlightened ago It would seem tin though everyone would make nn es pecial effort lo fight the disease and particularly to keen tint lnl.r,i,. bacilli out of milk that when imr. tides of manure or litter full into the milk they In all probability enr ry with them the deadly gerins of tuberculosis, which unseen are de livered to the Innocent consumer. No man or womau would feed a child with mill: In which they saw the tub ercle bacilli, so we have to rely up on the carefulnesa of the milkers to avert contamination of the milk with germs of the great white plague. The spread of this terrible disease from one Individual to another is bad enough without Increasing the danger from carelessness in milking. MKKKI.Y TO HKAT HHYAX. UMPQUA VALLEY LAND CO., Cass St. Office Mkccebee Temple Roseburg;, Oregon. Itl'STIXO THE Tltl'STS. This decision of the appellate court In favor of the Standard Oil Co., will be a hard burden for the pre&ent administration to carry in the coming election. It brings up the trust question lu a very emphatic manner and calls for an investiga tion of what actually has been done to curb the trusts. This was sup posed to be something, but It leaks so bad the boat Is liable to sink. In fact nothing practically has been ac complished under the present poll Icles of the government. High turlfl Is what has built the trusts up and is keeping them up. If the govern ment really wanted to bust the trusts It would take the tariff off truBt goods, or reduce it to such an extent as to bring the trusts to time. But the government Is trust ruled, and will do nothing of the kind, until there Is a change of ad ministration. It takes very little looking to Bee the point.
