There are many counties lu Mary land where gravel of en el lent ipuility Is uhunthtnt n nil where at the Name time there ls( very llltle stone that Is lit for road construction. The gravel, however, properly applied will make most excellent roads, far Hiipciiur to any earth road, and, while not possess ing the wearing qualities of hard, bro ken stone, will answer sulllcieutly well for those country roads that haw com paratlvely light tratllc. On roads hav ing very heavy tratllc It will he found lu the long run to le cheaper even at a very much greater Hist cost to use a macadam construction owing to the rapid wearing of the gravel Yond under such circumstances nml the conse quently large expense for maintenance A giMd gravel can always be told when Inspected, as tt stands In place , In tho pit. U hen- I during the AN ASPflALT ROAD. Now Jersey to Experiment With Mix ture of That Product With Dirt. The New Jersey state department of highways Is to construct lu Mercer county an experimental mile of n new automobile road, the plans fpr which State ltoad Supervisor Hubert A. Mee ker recently obtained lu Kansas City. Mr. Meeker says the new method of construction Is simple and cheap, that it Is self healing when broken and therefore practically Indestructible, that It Improves with age, that It Is mud 'ess. noiseless and almost tlustless and that It Is not slippery even when coated with Ice. In the bull. Hug of the road the origi nal soil Is finely pulverized, and then Into this there Is worked n mixture of hot asphalt, the whole mass lning thin ly rolled lu the finishing. Hrenks nro quickly repaired by tratllc, the weight of wheels cementing them together. The base yields slightly to heavy traf fic and then regains Its original shape. It Is equally good for horses and auto mobiles. If the experiment proves a success. It Is likely that the result will U a radi cal change In the road building meth ods of the state of New Jersey, with the substitution of asphalt for the mac adam process now used. the road Iwfore the gravel Is plaeM upoii It considerable improvement may ; ,,V(,r depressions me noth Ihj made on almost any of the road . roiling mstcrlals should WlieiW glHVHI in ooiBinuuiv. s .i ii.anr. ,,f M,UM llpnn Mll 1IIU tm. an even, bard ami tlrm roadbed WLmu j .m,,g continued until the surfing Is supported by proper foundations.
