Newman has been engaged to prosecute several appeals by par ties who tendered their applications to tile on Feb. 8, 190N, at Hoseburg, Or.," at the opening of fractional township 41 S., range I E., and who had their applications rejected on a technical point. The land was re-advert lned for opening April ;t0, IDitS, at which lat ter opening several other parties ap plied to enter portions of land now Involved in Attorney Newman's ap peal. At the opening" of Township 34 S.. range u ., April last, at Hoseburg, great many applications arose. and It appears that a considerable portion of that land wa claimed un der the mining laws, also on a great deal of the land squatters had plac ed their Improvements, In some cases many as three on one quarter- section, nnd that still other claim ants and applicants placed script and timber nnd stone applications cover ing prnctlcally all the land claimed by homesteaders and miners. Attor ney Newman has been employed by several of the last named applicants to look nfter their Interests, and it now in possession of a large number of photographic views showing the vast timber resources, also the topog raphy of the country, the improve ments of the squatters and mining amps on the land claimed by the elienU of Hr. Newman, which photo graphs were taken under his especial supervision, he having spent several days in company with a photograph or and cruiser. Mr. Newman Is also defending A L. Cifldek, who has been arrested on Uie charge of perjury in connection with some of tho above described land.
