If you are iu a villa on the hillside and want tu get downtown you take a running car and slide down over the cobblestones. Two strong men, each holding o tfulde rope, pull your car over a bag uf grease to grease the runners and then give you a running shove and jump each on a runner behind as the car shoots down at a breakneck pace over the cobblestones. The men yell, beua and dogs scam per, foot passengers cling close to the wall of the narrow street, the runners tfet hot and flit the air with odor of burning wood as you shoot round sharp orners, down the busy thoroughfare. ;)UBt gorgeous musses of flowering creepers which hang over the walls of the private villas that border your rond. For Rouetoivg aotl Vkiuity: Pair tonight; Friday fair sod cooler This week F. B. Walta sold to Hon. O. P. Cofc-ho an 18-acra tract from his big Round Prairie farm, which was recently subdivided and placed on the market. A Seattle gentleman purchased 11 acres there yesterday and some Portland people are making selections today. W. L. Cobb recently purchased a tract there which he will have set to fruit. This Is an Indication of how fast these small tracts are being taken up by people both at home and from abroad, aB this locality, known for many years as the Burnett farm, is one of the finest In the county. Mr. waite says he la receiving from 40 to 50 letters of inquiry every day as a result of his recent advertising in The Review and the Portland pa pers. Some of these Inquiries are coming from as far away as Oklaho ma, Texas and the Mississippi valley states. Needless to say, anyone who desires a choice tract of fruit land at a low price would better buy now as tho most desirable pieces will be ac quired soon and all are bound to advance rapidly in price. ORIGIN OF THE HORSE. Th Modern Animal a Cross Bttwn Two AncUnt Brdt. In Wlsfceu fur Alle Professor Koeulg llscusses In some detail the origin of the horse of today. He Uuds that the horse of neolithic times was not spe- llleally distinct from the horse of the present. While there Is uo doubt that the horse of that period was used by man for food, there seems to be no con- luslve evidence as to whether It was domestic,! ted or not. His own opinion, however, Is that It was probably do- mestlcstetl. he horse of that time was closely milled to the turpau or semlwlld horse that lived In southern Russia up to a 'eutury ago. This was a "hog maued," short legged, large headed beast. It seems probuble that the domesticated borne of the Germans of Caesar's time were derived from this breed. The Egyptians had horses as early us 1U0 R. C. These were long maned. more like the Arab horses, and cuuie from Assyria. Where the Assyrians obtained then) Is unknown, but It wrm probably from southern Ania. where this long maned breed has been devel oped lu all probability us the result of long continued domestication. The modern horse Is a cross between these two breeds, with a further mixture of the Arab horse. Tills Arab horse, too. was Itself a descendant of the earlier long maued horse. The origin of the long maued horse Is a mutter of doubt, but Professor Koe ulg thinks It max have been from au extinct Itidlau species. In Grants Pass Wednesday tin cups tied all over the street sprinkler was a unique way of announcing that the town had gone "on the water wagon." About 3 o'clock a. m., a party who had been celebrating dur ing the dying hours of the "wet" re gime held an impromptu "prayer meeting" in the street, where gospel hymns and others allowed vent for the feelings of the participants. Woman Who Msrry at Thirty-fivo. A (icrtmiu doctor lays It down as a well established fact based on close observation that women who do not marry uutil thlrty-tive or therealsmt Invariably achieve matrimonial suc cess. Why women of this particular age Mhoiild make mora successful mar riages thsii those who fall victim to love's young dreuiu is fairly obvious. When a young woman marries be tween thirty aud forty she either dues so for eompatilonshlp, choosing her mate accordingly, or from need, tu which case she also chooses with a certalu amount of care. She baa no wild dreams of uualloyed bllsa. Lou dou Lady's Plctorlnl. I Lines in Oregon) From Rosebur, Ore.
