The inuveihents for the abolition of the billboard and hand bill nuisance, the cutting of the weeds and grass about public and private places, are all in the right direction, says tlie Washington (Pa.) Observer. Well kept lawns, clean streets and al leys, vacant lots well delivered of weeds, are nil part of the work of making a city clean and beautiful. These tilings help any town. They at tract residents and draw capitalists. Hut while these efforts are being made by the residents of our towns, why should not the resident of the coun try districts also make reforms along this line? Any one passing through some sections of the country in the couutry districts is struck by the ill kept farmhouses, the surroundings iu many instances being anything but beautiful. The fields show an abun dant harvest, tlie sheep and cattle are grazing over the meadows, the corn !s prolific, and there Is everything to Indicate that the fanner Is prosperous. Itut about the house and scattered iver the farm are evidences of neglect !:i making the premises attractive. The lawn is 111 kept, the steps almost worn out, while about the fences weeds have grown up so as to almost obscure the view. Over tho farm there are dead trees, others which are iu sad need of trimming, and the whole farm indicat ing that no effort Is given toward mak ing it Inak beautiful, iicauty will add to the value of any farm, and those who would make the country more at tractive and their properties worth uioro money fhoiud give some attention t: these things, Tlie building of good roads will do more than any oilier one tiling to bring about Improved condi tions lu our country districts, and it Is already in evidence. Nothing has, however, yet been accomplished that amounts to definite and general Improvement, and hence it Is pertinent to Impure If the billboard Is to go. One of the most obvious steps In municipal betterment is to do away with unnecessary, unsightly objects. The billboard has been unsightly so long that many people regard It as permanently evil. At all events, it Is clear that if It Is to remain It can only do so under much better conditions than now obtain, and It must be sup ported on broader grounds than the fact that a handsome advertising bus! news has grown up through Its promo tion. No business can he successfully promoted by Improper means. The billboard, glaring and staring at every point, approaches the limit beyond which business should not go. Its mis fortune has been injudicious use. Hmv t Better tlie Home Town, One enterprising farmer writing to an agricultural paper states that he lias found that he could sell his honey for better prices In his home town than in the large cities. lie advises every producer of honey living near a town of 1,000 people or more to vul tlvate the market and claims that in a place of that size a ton of honey should be soltl each year, lie says that If every producer of honey should rush his er.p to the big cities as soon as gathered the price to the producer would go down to bed rock and the home market he bare unless returned by com mission men to local dealers, lie advises also the following of the Ha me plan with other products of the farm. Arrangements for furnishing the four cottages recently built at the Sol diers' Home, in West Roseburg, were completed last Saturday at a conference held at the Home by Commandant W. W. Elder, Governor Geo. E. Chamber lain, State G. A. R. Commander Hills, of Ashland, and State President of the W. R. C. Mrs. Jennie Harding, of Ore gon City. The four cottages were built with the appropriation of $2000 made by the legislature. The W. R. C. has contributed $500 toward furnish ing the cottages and the G. A. R will contribute whatever additional funds is necessary. Woodsheds for the cot tages and a water pipe line to connect them with the supply at the Home will be constructed at once. The furnish ings for the cottages will be installed by January 1st. No Poisoa in Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. The United States stands a chance of loosing milliins in valuable property if congress, at the coming session ratifies the surveys of the boundary made by British-American engineers now en gaged in making an international line, as the states will lose a strip 14 miles wide and between 200 and 300 miles long northward of Portland canal. Idaho, Oct, 28, 1905, Jesse Barker, aged 79 years, of injuries sustained in an ac cidental fall. The funeral was held at Spokane, Wash., on Oct. 31. Deceased was the father of Mrs. W. J. Hughes, of this city, with whom tie visited during the winter of 1904. He resided for many years on Deer Creek, this county. Besides his wife, Mrs, Mary V. Barker, and daughter, Mrs. Hughes, the deceased is survived by a brother, John Barker, of Surrner, Coos County, and the following children: Mrs. S. C. Hopkins, Mrs. Mary Chapman, H. C. Barker, T. J. Barker, J. A. Barker and Kate B. Barker, of Spokane, Wash.; Rev. John P. Barker, of Couer D' Alene, Idaho, and Mrs. J. M, Hutson, of Myrtle Creek, Douglas County. Mr. Barker was a member of the M. E. church, South, and a very highly respected citizen. THOMPSON At Bradford, Penn., Wednesday, Nov. 1, 1905, very sud denly, of fatty degeneration of the heart, C. K. Thompson, only remain ing brother of JudgeM. D. Thompson. of this city, aged oil years. The funeral was held at Fred on i a, N. Y, The deceased bad been for many years an esteemed employe of the Emory Oil Co., and was a man of many excellent qualities. Judge Thompson has been requested to go east, to assist in settling the estate of his late brother, but owing to his business is unable to go. XX. G. B. Burhans Testifies After Four Years. G. B.
