Newspaper Page TextI- Evening oseburg Review. Vol. VIII. ROSEBURG, OREGON, TUESDAY EVENING, JUNE 13, 1905. No. 89. FIRE IN NORTH ROSEBURG incendiary Causes Destruction of Mrs. Ira Gengcr's Cottage. Between the boursof 11 and 12 o'clock Monday night, fire of Incendiary origin completely destroyed the cottage of Mrs. Ira Genger, in the northern por tion of North Roseburg. That the cottage was deliberately set on ;flre is well established by the fact that it had not been occupied since six weeks ago, when Mrs. Genger aud her children moved into another house about one half mile distant, taking all of their household effects with them, save a few articles of furniture for which they bad no room. These articles were destroyed in the fire. The loss is about 8400 covered by 3250 insurance. There is no clew to the identity of the incendiary. The only motive ascribed for the deed is that the cottage may have been con sidered by the incendiary as a menace to the health of the community from the faut that two deaths from consump tion had occurred on the place, oue of them quite recently. Mrs. Genger's object in moving out was to have the cottage thoroughly overhauled and ren ovated. , Huge Task. Judge De- j Haven in tbe United States' court this morning over-ruled the demurrer of the defense and sustained the indictment of : the federal grand jury, charging Sena- j tor Mitchell with violating the federal statute by receiving fees for depart mental work while United States sena tor. It is specifically alleged that the senator was a member of the firm of Mitchell & Tanner, attorneys, and that money was paid them by Frederick Kribs for the purpose of expediting claims to land patents, The trial of the defendant was set for June 20, and the jury panel is now be ing drawn In the presence of the attor neys for the defence who have been accorded this privilege upon request, although it is an unusual proceeding. It was contended la the demurrer over-ruled by Judge DeHaven that Senator Mitchell, who was a member of the firm of Mitchell & Tanner, might have accepted the sum which it Is alleged Kribs paid him for expediting land entries, as money belonging to the firm, and not as a personal matter. It was also claimed the indictment does not specifically set forth that the indicted man was at the time of the alleged transaction, a United States senator, without which there could be no crime. Bloody Wyoming Fight. BI.AOKFOOT, Idaho, June 12. Four outlaws and two ranchers have been killed in a running fight of six miles between cattle rustlers and cattle rais ers at the edge of the wild Jackson's Hole country in Western Wyoming. Several horses were killed during the fight, five being shot down In one Boot. The cattle rustlers, it is stated, rounded up about 90 head of fine steers and started toward the most favorable railroad point, the intention being to gather more cattle enroute. The ranchers to whom the cattle belonged organized a posse and pursued. Very Annoying to tame People. Jolin Tucker Had Leg Broken in Log ging Camp. Special to Evening Review. Dkain, June 13. John Tucker, em ployed by the Leona Mills and Lumber Co., in one of their logging camps, had his left leg broken just above tbe knee yesterday. At 3 o'clock this morning a .battleship and three other vessels appeared off the fortress and were "sunk" by the vigorous five of the coast artillery guns.
