" 1 ' THE OLD RELIABLE A l GUST (i, lfKH. The St. Louis Platform. Any democrat who says he cannot stand on the St. Louis platform is look inn 'or an excuse for voting the repub lican ticket. The plutform is demo cratic to the core. It has the genuine, old-time democratic ring. There is no uncertainty in any of its declarations, no shulllings, no evasions, says the Salt Lake Herald, Every word means ex actly what it says and every sentence is bo plain, so simple that a child can un derstand all of them. Take, for ex ample, the tariff plank: "We denounce protection as a rob bery of the many to enrich the few, and we favor a tariff limited to the necessi ties of the government, economically administered, and so levied as not to discriminate against any industry, class or section, to the end that the burden of taxation shall be contributed as equally as possible." A cardinal democratic principle is a tariff for revenue only, not one design to foster and encourage the organiza tion of trusts. In this respect the tariff plank in the St. Louis platform should satisfy the most exacting democrat. On similar plunks the democrats went before the people and won victories in and in Mill. The peopk- will staad' with them on It in 1!HU. On the trust question the platform is equally clear and emphatic. It says: ' "We recognize that the gigantic trusts ami combinations which Lave been fostered and promoted under republican rule, as a menace to bene ficial competition and uu obstacle to permanent business proajterily. A pri vate monoply is indefensible and intol erable. Individual equality of oppor lunlty and a free comH3tition are es sential to a healthy and permanent commercial prosperity: and any trust, combination or monoply tending to destroy these by controlling produc tion, restricting competition or fixing prires, should be prohibited and pun ished by law We demand a strict enforcemnnt of the existing civil mnil criminal statutes against all such truNta, combinations and momixlies, and wo demand tho enactment of such further legislation as may be necessary effectually suppress them." Another iuitortaut matter discusred by the platform is the question of na tional irrigation. Ami credit for the imasage of the national irrigation laws placed with the democratic party, whoro it proerly belongs. Contin uing, the platform pledges the party to Itirnihh domestic development along Ihe mmo line. Hut to call attention to all of the ad mirable features of the platform would ho ui reprint it in its entirwty. It is auntcienl to say, In conclusion, as was said at the outset, that there is no good ruanon why any democrat should re futte to support both plat form and can Mi idates. Every member favored a plan by which fire protection would be assured, hydrants installed and hous es supplied and the facilities given for sprinkling lawns and streets. By the proposed plan water for city use would cost $410 per year, for each residence SI. 50 a month, not fewer than sixty users of water to make such agreements at the start. The residence rate will be made less as the number of users in creases. Manager Calloway, of the Cow Creek Lumber & Flume Co., was In the city on Monday, when he stated that all the machinery had been delivered at his mill by Austin & Wall, and that most of it had been placed in position. Planks were placed upon the dam Tues day, finishing that structure. Prepar atory work will be completed by Satur day night and the cutting of logs will be commenced next Monday morning unless a change is made in plans. There were 50,000 feet of logs on the creek bank Monday, many additions to that amount having been made since, so.no shortage of material is among the probabilities. Rights of way for the projected Hume, which will be seven teen miles in length, are being ar ranged for, land owners being almost a unit in favor of the enterprise, which is a welcome addition to the business fac tors of this region. Myrtle Creek News. C. O. White has bought the Joe Foreman residence property in Myrtle Creek: consideration i00. Jeff Bailey and family left this morn ing for the Allen & Lewis mine at Placer, Josephine county, where Mr. Ilailey will be employed in the mine during tho summer, while his wife will conduct the boarding house at the mine. An important business change was made in Myrtle Creek this week where by Dement Sisters take charge of the Ovorland Hotel, having leased the house from the owner, Wm. P. John son. For the present these ladies have closed their Myrtle Hotel, which had boon enjoying a good patronage under their eilloient management. These ladies, who understand the hotel busi ness thoroughly, will make some need ed improvements almut the place. L. B. Saxton, who has been man ager of this hotel for the past two months, left Monday for his former home in Pittsburg, l'a. While riding horseback at a break neck seed down a mountain two miles south of town to head off a runaway cow, last Monday, Todd Hall, of this place, met with a serious accident. He collided with the snag; of an old tree, which projected into the road, was lifted bodilv into the air and there suspended in an unconscious condition 1 until taken down by two com- ! panions, who were with him at the time. It was found that the snag had pierced his right side to a depth of four inches making an ugly wound.
