Gov. Peabody has abolished martial
law at Cripple Creek and the civil
authorities are once more in command
of the situation. These civil authorities
however, aro not the men chosen by
the people. They were forced to resign
and were sujerseded by men chosen by

Attempt to be Made From Summits
of Shasta and Hood.
The Portland Muzaraus, to Ibe fateful
number of thirteen, passed through
Ashland Wednesday on the noon over
land on their way to Sisson, from where
tomorrow they will storm the heights
of Mount Shasta, says the Tidings.
They were armed with alpenstocks
lumberjack's shoes with spikes in them,
and along with their other parapher
nalia they are reported to be carrying
masks, sunbonnets, boxes and bundles
of face powder and actors' grease puint.

nip, Mrs. Korthrup, Mrs. C. C. Chap
man, Miss Edna George, Mrs. Will G.
Mcllae, Frank B. Uiley, Mrs. Riley,

A very important and interesting fea
ture of the trip will be the experiments
at signaling, next Monday, from the
top of Mount ShaBta to the summit of
Mount Hood. Will G. Steel, an en
thusiastic Ma.ama, will be on top of
the latter mountain at noon of that day,
and by means of a large mirror will
make suntlashes all the afternoon in
the direction of Mount Shasta. The
party on Shasta will also Hash a mirror
in the direction of Mount Hood, and it
Is hoped that the much discussed
question as to whether the summits of
the two mountains are visible from
each other will be settled.
On Monday night, the Mazamas have
arranged to burn ten pounds of red
Hash powder, at the hour of 0:30 pre
cisely. This is expected to burn one
and one-half minutes, and if Mr. Steel,
on the summit of Mount Hood sees It,
he will reply by setliug off a similar
signal of red tire exactly five minutes
later. If, however, be docs not notice
the red lire on the summit of Shasta,
he will, at 9:45, set oil ten pounds of
the red powder on the chance of the
llame being Been at Shasta.
