Enraged because his divorced wife
refused to accord him an interview, E.
D. Tobin, a mining man from Baker
City, fired three shots at hor in her
rooms in the Ainsworth block In Port
land Thursday evening, with the in
tention of killing her. Two of the
bullets were dctlocted by her corset
steels, but the third pierced her arm.
She fled from the room and Tobin ap
plied a lighted match to the paper
wrapper enclosing a box of dynamite
which be carried and to which a fuse
was attached. Then he shot himself in
the head, expiring Instantly. Attract
ed by the noise of the shots, a man in
an adjacent otllce rushed into the room
and put out the blazing fire just in time
to prevent an explosion which would
have wrecked the whole building and
perhaps brought death to a score or
more of people.
