Exchange. Senator Hanna is trying to have the naval cadets who were expelled for hazing readmitted to the Naval Acad emy. With Perry S. Heath, Major Rathbone, and the Annapolis hazers, the senator seems to be the champion of those who have fallen from grace the civil, military and naval outcasts. A telegraphio dispatch states that Japan's action signifies peace; a second declareathat Japan's squadron is active; a third says that Japan lands marines at Corea, and a fourth Bays that no com plication will ensue. You pay your money and you take your choice. Those corresxndents should get to gether and adopt a policy. Ex. Beginning January 1st, Texas vir tually ranks among the prohibition states of the union. The anti-saloon movement was begun several years ago but it was not until the last summer that Its success became assused. In three months more than 200 counties "went dry" as a result of a vote of the 3eople. The saloon element put up a bitter fight, both at the polls and in the courts, but it was worsted every where, with the result that the Lone Bur state began the year asatutotater. Ex. Engineers on Coos Bay. The engineers In charge of the rail road survey, which has extended from the Southern Pacific track at Drain to Kiklon, thence down the Umpqua river to Winchester Bay, thence along the oaat and is within a few miles of Coon bay, have changed their headquarters to this city. That Is, they will open an offlce here, where all the drafting and working up of the Held notes will be done. The surveyors are now work ing in the vicinity of Saunders Lake. Marshfleld Sun. City School Principal Churchill has, after a strict investigation, beeri unable to ascertain who assaulted Nicholas Eichner, the 7-year-old boy, who died last Saturday evening from the effects of a kick. At the Growers' Conference held tn Salem, July 25th, a motion waa 'carried requesting the Prune Growers1 Associations to send three delegates ench to a meeting to be held on the second Tuesday in January, 1901, to form some plan for a co-operative or central selling agency. As the an nual meeting of the Northwest Fruit Growers occurs on next Tuesday, Jan. 12th, at 308, Washington St., Portland, Ore., the date above chosen, it is thought best by our directors to re quest the associations to instruct their delegates to meet at that time and place. Furthermore, that all prune growers who possibly can do so should attend this meeting of fruit growers of the northwest. Prune men, while repre senting the largest item among the various fruits produced in the north west, have heretofore been conspicuous by their absence. Nogrower can afford to miss the helpfulness of the discus sions and papers which will be afforded by attendance at this meeting. We understand a reduced fare on the certificate plan will be available. A time and place for the conference above referred to will be provided and an- j nounced at the meeting on Monday and also on Tuesday morning, and all growers in attendance will probably be invited to participate therein.
