The big majority of the foreigners who come to this country snow an eager desire to Americanize them selves. They are pathetically- anx ious to acauire knowledge of Eng lish. Many of them made a record of patriotism In the late war that ' set an example to tne native stock But all over the country you find cer tain localities where the aliens show no desire to adjust themselves to the American standards. Their purpose is to return with their dollars to the. old country. Frequently they rent farms and raise quick -money crops that bring quick speedy returns while exhauBtlng the soil. A Nebraska man In a recent newspaper letter gives his views about It. In his locality . 50 per cent of the farms are held by Russians. They cling to old cus- tome, are rough In talk and habits. , and' a demoralizing Influence in the schools. He asks for laws making , Illegal to speak foreign language either In public or private. That of course Ib action so radical that none of the states would lie likely to adopt It. It will be a wiser policy to ap proach these people In a more friend' ly way, and show them what they are missing by their aloofness. The . American people have little use for the foreigner who comes' In here to make money for a few years, and then run with his bag of dollars, will be much more hopeful to organ ize new forces of labor eupply among hoys and women, than to depend on , those whose only desire Is to take wealth out of the country. This type of immigrant should be made to real ize that he will get no favors until he takes out naturalization papers makes an effort to learn English, and settles down to permanent citizen ship. . The president of the United States Food Administration Grain Corpora tion protests that America shall not place the power to name the value of its products In the hands of any concentrated buying agency, no mat ter how friendly." But why not give that power to the forthcoming league of nations? We are to give that League the power to say when we Bhall go to war; we are to give that League power to Bay when we shall send our citizens overseas as soldiers ' to Bottle the international disputes of Europe: we are to give tnat liea- . gue power to determine Innumerable questions regarding our international relations why not give the League power to say what price we shall sell the wheat for which the govern ment is to pay the farmers J2.26 Are not a few million dollars of less consequence than our International relations and the lives of our sol- dlers? The socialists swear Eugene Debs . will be liberated from jail. Why not? The administration has Been fit to give the conscientious objector fine "handy-me-down" and a nice, snug little bonus, those who were brazen enouah to violate the espion age act have been politely condoned and that prince of "patriots" the slacker has been robed in a garment ot white and turned loose to gambol and frUk about on green pastures while thousands ot our boys who nave only been In the front line trenches and dodging shrapnel on the border of 'No Man'B Land" are given the same Blxty bones minus the con dolent and spotless garments. No sooner is one vice disposed of than another climbs the ladder to take Its place. John Barleycorn Is breathing his laBt and the latest wrinkle among some of Raseburg'e fair sex Is the clever manipulation of ci car ottos. Its merely a matter ol choice, whether you take it from the neck of a bottle or between your flnitor tins both habltB have a do- grading effect. A man over at Marshfleld has paid a line ot thirty bucks tor Bteallng a pair of shoos. A fow yonis ago ho would have paid only half of thle amount for stealing a whole calf. Sunday, March 30, the daylight savings law goes Into effect again all over the nation. This Ib only an ''oyooponor" for the tardy snoozor. Since the first of the present yenr there has boen an excoss of six inches In the annual rainfall. This ought to be enough to satisfy most people. A local toucher said she always liked the children In her room to "appear froBh In the morning." Some we know are that way all tne lime The exact date whon aprlng plow ing will commence Is still qulto in definite but It Is not too early to polish tho plow shnro. Yos, all Douglas county noeds co-oporntlvo cannery with a solid foundation under the co-operative, Tho only porson who seems to wor- THE ry much about his tutiiro is one who Is nevor going to lmvo any. Tho only trouble with folks Is Ihnt they don't have common Bonne. But who Is going to be the judget And the poet Is silent on March weather but tho weather man Is on the job all the time. A modiste Is so-called because hor prices never nnd styles seldom are. Self-praise not only Is half scandal but sometimes Is wholly an untruth. ; LBttE-SULTHUR SPRAY J ...
