EDENBOWER TO LOSE POST OFFICE JAN 31 Official notice received at the lo cal postofflce today announces the discontinuance of the ipoBtofflce at Edenbower, effective Jan. 31, 1919. After that date all mail addressed to Edenbower will be delivered at the Roseburg postofflce. The pres ent patrons of the Edenbower office will have their choice of receiving their mail either at the Roseburg office or on the rural delivery route that extends through that locality. : After the establishment of the rur al route through Edenbower a year ago, the patronage of the postofflce there so heavily diminished that It no longer became worth while to con duct It. A short time ago the post master, Miss Ethel M. Crittenden, re signed. The postofflce department advertised a civil service examina tion to select a successor but there were no applicants on the (prescribed date, and the closing order followed as a necessity. Since the resignation of Miss Crittenden the office has been in charge of J. W. Tollman, the Ed enbower merchant. : Patrons of the Edenbower office who desire their mall delivered by the rural carrier after January 81 should make -arrangemontB in ad vance with the carrier r at the Roseburg office. They must install at the roadside one of the several types or rural mall boxes approved by the postmaster general and so stating thereon. No other type of box will enable a patron o receive his mail. Live-wire Doings of City Visiting Daughter. Mrs A. G. Brown, of Wilbur, arriv ed in the city this morning and Is visiting at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Quine. To Return Here Soon. Word was received today by Mrs. Joe Fitzgerald that her husband, who has been located at Kelly Field, Tex as, for Bome time, will be discharged and return home this week. Visiting In Roseburg. Mrs. B. M. Harbour, of Portland, who has been visiting at the home of J. W. Longbrake, near Sutherlln, arrived in Roseburg last night and will visit here for several days be fore returning to her home. - Visiting With Relatives. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Smith, of Port land, who have been visiting In Rose burg for a few days, left this morn ing for Hugo where they have friends and relatives with whom they will visit for a week or ten 4ays. . Exiocted to Arrive Tonight. Roy Phillips, who has been serv ing with Co. B, 76th Infantry, at Camp Lewis, is expected to arrive In this city tonight asi a message was received yesterday stating that he had been discharged and was leaving ror home. Attendance Improved. All the churohes of the city report a marked Increase in attendance at yesterday's services. The "flu" scare has held many from attending these meetings for the past few weeks, but with the abating of the disease the attendance is increasing greatly. Studied Dminnage Plans. County Agricultural Agent. C. J. Hurd, returned Saturday night from Corvallts, where he was called by a meeting of the County agents of the State and where he also studied for a short time, the latest and most Im proved methods of irrigation and drainage. Will Movo to Hotel Umpqua. Mr. and1 Mrs. B. B. Hermann are proparng to leave the fine residence where they have been making their home and will take a suit of rooms at the Hotol Umpqua. The repeal of the present motor vehicle law and in crease in motor vehicle taxes, amounting to several hundred per cent for some classes of vehicles, is provided for in a bill prepared by the roads and highways committee of the Behate as part of the good roads program. ThOBe who ride merely for (pleasure must pay for the luxury and oper ators of heavy trucks will bear much of the expense of maintaining roads worn out by their vehicles according ,to this measure. The highest assess ment against them would foe $500 for trucks of over six tons capacity. Electric pleasure- vehicles, termed- "rich mens toys" by some committee members, would be taxed 140 Instead of the present $6 license fee. The increase for motor cycles and motor bicycles, was $2, making the license $5 Instead' of $3 at present.
