TUESDAY, JANUARY ai, 1010. WOMEN JURORS. . In six states of the Union women are already ollgible for Jury duty. In. only one of these, Idaho, their service Is compulsory. The women of New York, who have recently ac quired the ballot, are now urging the passage of a law, which will permit them to serve as jurors, since the state constitution, framed in the days when nobody dreained of any thing else, expressly states that "miB" shall serve In this capacity. These New York women feel that Jury duty is not only the rignt nut the very Bolemn duty of every citizen. They claim furthermore that there will he fewer travesties of JUBttce, where women sit in the box. It Is certain that beautiful women notor iously escape the penalty of their crimes, and the fault is often laid at the door of Impressionable men, who somehow can never quite get over the ridiculous weakness for beauty in distress. Probably the men will be only too glad tq have women serve quite gen erally as Jurors, for it is one of the most unpleasant duties wnicn ran to 'the lot of the conscientious citizen It takes time, and concentrated at tention. and one must be very cons- clous of his own rectitude ever to feel quite happy sitting In judgment upon his fellow men.' Undoubtedly with the progress of suffrage women everywhere will be called upon for this duty. It will be a fine test of their patriotism and enthusiasm and of their ability. If anything done by man or woman can clean up this system which should be the finest servant of justice in a free land, but which nas been .. deservedly under -the shadow of dis repute for so many years, by all means let it be done. Heaven knows, Jury service has come to little honor In the .hands of men; perhapB the . hand of woman Is the ueeded1 cure. : KEEP THIO SAVINGS STAMPS. Much has been said about the duty and desirability of holding onto Li liertyi Bonds. Little lias been said about holding onto War Savings Stamliw. One is no less important than the other. Indeed, t..o Btainps may in time become more important than the bonds, for with the big war emergency .bills once taken care of the government may stop Its bond lsueB and depend' entirely on the steady Issuance and sale of these "baby bonds". Lately the public has been cashing the stamps in enormous quantities. In some cities the amount paid out by the post ofllce in the course of a day or week has been more than that taken in. Thousands of people, all at once, seem to have doclded that they needed their cash money. It is an extromoly bad prac tice to turn in one's accumulation of thrift and savings stumps, except for gonuine emergencies bad for the holder and bad for the country. The fact that -the war is over, or prac tically ro, is no excuse,, ror the roy- eminent noods the money ns much as evor. . Why not send tho Kalsor to Bon In a passengor ship with a German crew, give him a fair Btnrt, and then hunt him with a fleet of his own U-boats? Our genial old frlond Ilornstorft says that "Germany washes her nanus of Russia." But can Bhe got tno slain on? Bet a lot of thoso fellows who mar- rlod to dodge the draft are sorry now. There's no peace conference lor them. IE HRIFT CORVALLIS, Jan. 20. OF I Says We Must Keep Feet Dry, Avoid Exposure and Eat Less Meat Stay off the damp ground, avoid ex posure, keep feet dry, cat less meat, drink lots of water and above all take a spoonful of salts occasionally to keep down uric acid. Rheumatism is caused bv poisonous toxin, called uric acid, which is gene- rateu in inc Dowels and absorbed into the blood. It is the (unction of the kidneys to filter this acid from the blood and cast it out in the urine. The ?orcs of the skin arc also a means of rccing the blood of this impurity. In damp anu cniuy, cold weather the skin pores are closed, thus forcing the kid neys to do double work, they become weak and sluggish and fail to eliminate this uric acid which keeps accumulating and circulating through the svstem. eventually settling in the joints and muscles causing stiffness soreness and pain called rheumatism. At the first twinge of rheumatism act from any pharmacy about four ounces of Jad Salts ; put a tablespoonful in a giass oi water ana drink before breakfast each morning for a week. This is said to eliminate uric acid by stimu lating the kidneys to normal action, thus ridding the blood of these impur ities. lad Salts is inexnrtnxivrV harm) anrl Is made from the acid of grapes and lemon juice, combined with lithia and is used with excellent results by thou- sanos oi ioucs wno are subject to rheu matism. Here you have a pleasant, effervescent lithia-water drink which overcomes uric acid and is beneficial to your kidneys as well To the People of Roseburg and Douglas Co.
