THE WAR COMFORTS CAMPAIGN, It Is not enough to arm and clothe the soldiers, and provide them with all the munitions and englery ol war. They are not mere inachlneB. They are human beings, our own dearest ones who are BUfering and dvlne for us. . The Christian Associations, Knights ot Columbus. Jewish Welfare board and other organizations for which the war worh canvass Is now to be made, are absolutely essential to the success of our armies as . a fighting force. Morale Is everything on the battel field. The soldier who is lone ly, homesick, discouraged, is a poo: fighter. ' ' But you take him down to one of these blessed huts where brave and seir-sacrltlclng, will Be thaV ho Is warmed and fed and cheered up, and he is another man. The men came In almost wrecks after the- strain of fighting and the sight of suffering and death. They are unstrung ana not masters of temselves. The tronB formation wrought in the huts is something, marvellous. The hand shake, the comeradeshlp, the cheer ful bit of music, the word of counsel and friendship: these tone a man up and" he is himself again. Now he can go out and fight. The work ofthes organizations are . not. only of groat military value, but it keeps the men up to a high mora standard. Formerly wars were de moralising to the character of the soldiers and many of them return ed forever corrupted by enfeebling vlcos. The various huts stand for the clean, manly soldier life, and they will return our boys to us phy Blcally nd morally better than they were when they left. - As It is-going to need $170,500, 000 to carry on this war comfort work, It Is manifest that everyone has got to bo pretty deep into his pocket. -, it Is no time for the lltlc gifts we ordinarily make to home charities, 1 The home-coming day for the boys "over thore" will eclipse any evenl ever staged in these old United States. She will be n' hummer and no mistake. , The News Is glad to note that the Kaiser is off the roost but thosi Red QuardB don't look like a pro per substitute for closing the deal. It will be sad day for German: when the end coineB but all the world will rojolce. We are alroady for the band: tc start playing, "When Our Boys Come Marching Home." Lest we forget the U. P. scoop A PATRIOTIC APPEAL The call has come annln In in tn give for the sake of our boys "Over wnr Work Campaign representing the Y. M. C. A., Y. W. 0. A., Jewlah Welfare Board, Knights of Colum bus, Wnr Cnmp Community Service, American Library ..ssoclatlon and Salvation Army. This Ib the largest call that has come to us nt nny time during the War. Douglas County is naked for $27,800. One half of this has been apportioned to Rosoburg. This means about $3.00 for each man, woman and child In the city. Will you do your sharo and more. In other placeB the well-to-do ore hundreds and thousands In subscriptions, while those without property are giving a days wages or moro. We must mens ure up. Because the theatres, churches, schools and other public assemblages are under the bnii, these sources of Information are cloBeu. All objec tions however have been fully nns wored to the satisfaction of all these organizations before the plan was adopted. So If you believe In any one of them, then glvo all your hnnr tlost support, ot us all lay aside our prejudices nt this time and Btnnd togethor for the moral, spirit ual ana physical woirare of our boys. When the volunteer workers call upon you next Tuesday or lator, let your response bo immediate mid wholehearted. ' Let ub all give till It hurls, then give again. Remember that this is not a loan hut a Rift. let It be a measure of your gratitude. Roseburg will do more than her duty 1u this worthy cause. AUBREY O. SMITH, v I. City Chairman. COTTAGE GROVE, Ore., Nov. 9. The people of this community were greatly Incessed by the peace hoax put up by the United Press. They had gone almost wild with Joy ana a clebration was just about to start when the old reliable Associated, Press came through witn the news that the German emlssarlos had not yet reached the headquarters of Mar shal Focli. The cries of wild acclaim Immediately turned to denunciation of the news service that had perpe trated the hoax and the papers that had printed it. Many have during the past 24 hours discontinued sub scription to papers that carried the hoax and one news dealer has dis continued the sale of a Portland pa per currying the United Press service DATE PURE BRED SALE SET FOR NOV. 23. ' Col. A. L. Stevenson, Auctioneer for Mr. Prank Brown of Carlton, who is manager for the Shorthorn- Asso ciation, was in Rosebtirg yesterday conferihg with county agent Hurd, as to the details of the deferred salo.i Mr. Stevenson Bays that he Is per sonally acquainted with the consign ors of the livestock for the sale and assured Mr. Hurd that there would be nothing in the consignment, but tha vni'V hnaf tvnaa nt lha hraaH Owing to the fact that the stock haa already been assembled, it was thought advisable to try to have the Bale on the 23rd notwithstanding the fact that the quarantine has not yet been raised at Roseburg. The sale will possibly take place at this time even though the quaran tine Is not raised in Roseburg. . Some place will be secured In the country near Roseburg and the cattle moved out there for the sale, but it Ib con- ildentally hoped; that the quarantine will be raised at Roseburg and that the sale can take plnce within the city limits. Mr. Brown informed Mr. Hurd that he wan going to San Francisco to judge the Shorthorn cattle at the In ternational Show there and that he would be back In time for the sale here on the 23rd. There has neon a grave mistake made in announcing peace at this time with the Germans but it is not a mistake, that when your garments need expert attention in the line of cleaning, repairing, and pressing, that we can do it Just the way that you wish it done. . W j- alHo take or ders for dyeing. Maybe your suit Is not as old as he looks. Let us give you our opinion on it. IMPERIAL CLEANERS. (Try Our Way.) We call and deliver. Phone 277.
