How a division of American sol dierB in Fiance played raven to the Elijah of a family of starving French-regufees, found cowering in the attic of an old meat market, and how Elijah, in turn, mado the ra vens comfortable, is told in this story, written by a Y. M. C. A. war work Becretary in Franco: "A division of our troops were on the move. For thirty-eight hours the men had been on the cars. Then they had detrained, and started to hike for the front. Two days of march Ing had left thorn stiff and tired. "The Y. M. C. A. men had gone ahead of them. They know that the troops would be in a certain village by a certain time. So thoy loaded three big trucks with canteen sup plies, hustled to the village, and looked around for a canteen. "They found; an old meat market with the Bhutters up, located the owner, and got the key. The sup plies were unloadod, and the trucks started back to town. The town men left behind to 'open up' lighted a Han dle, and began an investigation. "Up the steep stone steps they found a room, with a family of re fugees crouched Inside. The old fireplace had been opened. A few twigs, the size of a lead pencil, made a fire as big as a coffee cup. "A mother nursing a baby sat on the floor in front of the fire, two small girls whose eyes seemed un naturally hig in -their thin, little faces cowering near hor, scared" by tho stops they had heard. A daugh ter about fifteen yearH old was cook ing some nondescript hits or food in nn old frying-pan. The father, n little mnn, badly crippled In the early battles of the war, started for wnrd, as the strangers approached.
