COUNTY CLERK GETS A short time ago a hob cat scalp was sent to. the county clerk's olll with a request for tho bounty on the same. The clerk, by his deputy. Miss Rita Cobb, wrote to the sender of the sc;ilp explaining that according to tho law it would be necessary for the whole bide to be sent. This is well in excess of the Grants Pass quota. It was rendered pos sible because overyone from the Chamber of Commerce down the line got behind the local war library council. Grants Pass held! its cam paign a week ahead because it had other patriotic plans for campaign week, September 24 to 20. incidentally, Grunts Pass has not only mado a state wido record but a national record, as it Is tho first city In America to subscribe to the fund. Every town In Oregon has organized now. At Amity, Oregon, the mem bership oT tho local council Is com posed exclusively of mothers of sol diers, under the chairmanship of Mrs. Rilta Thomas. Salem Is centering Its campaign on this week and in addition is making a display at tho stato fair for the rund. Judge McGinn will make a patriotic ad direst at tho fair for the fund. At Eugene, they sny they will raise easily their $l,0(to quota. Up to date 204 cities and towns In Oregon have organized complete ly and havo announced their entire willingness to got behind tho fund. A dollar subscribed to the fund will: 1. Ituy a book nnd maintain it for three years. 2. Pay part of the cost of tho 32 central library buildings. 3. Pay its part of librarians' sal aries and equipment of buildings. -Even in peace times a dollar never did bo much. It is only because ev ery author has waived' his royalties and every publisher his prolils, ulso bocuuso tho campaign does'not cost a cent, all expenses having been pri vately subscribed. Two young fellows were walking up Jack son street enrouto to the depot, each purtaking of an ice cream rune. One remarked to tho other "that he un derstood that Itoaeburlf was infested with typhoid fevor and that tho germs were in everything from fee cream to the drinking water.
