Leon McClIntoclc and Clarence TeHtor, both members of the Sanitary troops located at Fort Canby, "some where la Washington," are schedul ed to arrive in noscburg next week for a short Yiit Willi friends and relatives here. Other members of that organization located at Forts Columbia and Stevens are also plan ning to take a trip here at that time and the city will undoubtedly be crowded with the ' home boys," if they are successful In securing their leave 01 absence. Clifford Lilly, of Glide, who 1b connected with the hospital corps at i'ort Bvens, has had a very tedious Job during the past two weeks. His duties were to take caro of a case 01 Mpinal menengitis that has. ' been placed in quarantine there. Cliff volunteered for the position and ac cording to reports reaching hero, has been a very successful nurse. Kvery precaution has been taken by the physician there to see that ho does not contract the disease. , The Fourth company boys are all "hitting heavy," and at the present time are plunged Into their work with a great deal of vim and vigor. Del win Jewett'ls still at the post of keeping the boys In good spirits and every evening his "circus voice" can be heard riiilng loudly all over the camp. There is a rumor to the effect tha several evenings ago, residents 01 Hammond, a town near Fort Stev ens sit on the front porches In the evening and listen to him talk. Ham in oriel is about a mile and one-half from the fort. Nearly every boy from Douglas county located at the forts at the mouth of the Columbia Is gaining in weight, which Is strong evidence that the food their receive is suflicient and of good quality. The Fourth com pany lads have been having regular banquets lately with the food sent from Koseburg and they state that nothing could be moro appreciated. According to word received In this city today from Karl Vanblbber, bugler with the Fourth company, two hours extra drill per day Is now be ing hold which points strongly to an early move. There has been some talk of a movo to North Carolina, but nothing definite has been learned In regard to this. It is only reasonable. nowover, mat the forts at the Colum bia mouth will bo no good this win ter as training places on account of tho rainy season. It Is very probable that boiiio of the coast artillery coni panics will be changed to heavy ai- tlllery nnd bo moved to some camp in tho south where they can receive bet tor training. Bortell Ford, a Riddle boy and Koy cedarstrom, of Melrose, both members of the Sanitary troops who were transferred to Ft. Columbia sev oral weeks ago, state that they like tneir new post line nnd urc receiving (ho best of treatment there They are under the command of Lieut Mott, and ho has been devoting n great duul of time lately Instructing them in bandaging and arts of first aid. Tho two boys will probably visit in this city next week. liy tho time the last typhoid injec tion Is given the boys, their arms will roBomblo a solve or a sponge, being so full of tho holes from too hypo dermic needle. It Is very lie Miliar the way the "shots' affect the different lads, nnd some of them are k locked completely out by it, while others only suffer a sore arm. While Brand ing at attention on tho parade grounds at Canby several days ago. poveral huskies "keeled" over and the Sanitary troops woro forced to resort to the ammonia botllo in or der to revive them. IHU Truntfboh, a member of the Fourth company, who was recently promoted to sergeant, Is handling his new duties in a very efficient manor and the other lads who were alr.o advanced in rank are doing like wise. They will undoubtedly make their mark In tho present war and in easo a transfer "across t no waves" is made they will stand a good show of receiving a commission. ATTAt'MMKNT FILKD. J. S.
