Accom?;ng to word received In this city from Frank Neuner, and W. L. H. Osborne, who are attending the officers' training caniji at the Presidio in San Francisco, they took the oath of allegiance on May 16, which was a very impressive affair.' Their letters to friends here state that there-was about fifteen hundred who took the oath at. the same time they did and the military cere monies accompanying it formed a beautiful opening for this famous camp. These Koseburg boys who are attending state that they have been garbed in olive drah uniforms and are required to have their shoes Blilned at all times. The description of the whole af fair that reached here today is very vivid and is given In part: Promptly at 9 o'clock. Col, Fred W. Sladen, commanding the camp or 2000 mid his aides. Captain .lames Iohson and Major L, C Urown, Presidio commander, strode on the great parade grounds overlooking San Francisco Hay. Three enlisted men bearing the colors followed The candidates were drawn up in 15 companies in strict military for mation. At a word of command by' Capt, Ilohson lliOo left hands removed as many hats. Fifteen hundred right hands were raised in silence; a coast artillery bund struck up "Tho Star Spangled Manner" and the Stars and Stripes woro pulled aloft where a stiff trade wind whipped tho soft folds over the heads of hundreds viewing the ceremony. Again tho band struck up a mill tnry march and the companies one by one circled and .paraded from the Hold to barracks and cantonemrnt where each candidate signed the oath, in which he sworo "faith and allegiance to tho United States of America" and promised to "obey the orders of tho officers appointed over us" and agreed to "accept such com missions In the oflicers' corps as are tendered us nt tho expiration of three months training." The remainder of the 2500 men undergoing training had previously (alien tho oath, having already re ceived their commissions. Actual training of tho candidates begun at tho reveillo at 5:45 a. m. when they left bed and bunk to elenn up barracks before beginning tho day's work. From now on until August 14 every man In camp will devote ten hours a day to the hard est kind of military routine under strict Btiperviscion of regular army off Jeers, flly Apsocluteil Press.) (By Aaaocmtea Press.) OSSINING, N. Y., May 21. Dr. Arthur Warren Waite, who was con victed in New York of poisoning to death his wealthy father-in-law, will be executed here next Thurs day, it is announced. The condemn ed man now is spending most of nib time reading and writing letters. NEW YORK, May 21. Dr. Ar thur Waite, dentist and tennis play er of rqputo, was convicted on June 1, 1916, of poisoning his wealthy father-in-law, John K. Peck, of Grand Itapids, Mich., at the sv.iftesr trial of a sensational murder cant in this county in years. The crime is best explained In the words of" the District Attorney, Edward Swaun, . who told the jury: "The cause ofi this deed was solely the desire for inouey. There ware no angry pas-! sions Involved, no sex relation, no' envy, hatred or malice; nothing hut! the purpose ot obtaining easy i.ion-. oy." ! The .murder was exposed through . a mysterious telegram sigr.i'd "K.! Adams"sent to Percy Peck at Grund. nupids, brother oT Dr. Waite's wife, i suggesting an autospy and relating "suspicions aroused demand ayop-; sy." The authorities took up the1 case and ait autopsy showed Mr. i Peck died from arsenic poisoning, j ir. Wnito confessed to the dis-j trict nttornoy that he hud bought arsenic three days before the dath! of his fathor-In-law on March 12, but; said ho had done so on request of tie . olderly man who told him he wished : to commit suic'tdo as he wps de spondent over the death of his wife,' who died on Jonuary SO. twenty days after she had arrived at Dr. Waito's home here. To bear out this statement Dr. Waite trie! to bribo a former negro servant to tes tify that she knew of Mr. Peck's de sire to commite suicide. j As evidence against him began to accumulate Dr. Waite made an un-' successful attempt to kill himself by taking an overdose of drugs. For 8ovei'al days ho lay In a stupor hov ering between llfo and death. i It was brought out at the trial that a few hours after Dr. Waite married Miss Clara Peck ho com plained to her about tho money set tlement made on him. lie had been promised $50,000 but his wife's fath er instead of giving him a lump Biira provided payments of month ly. Arriving in this city the couple found awaiting them nn expensively furnished apartment, a gift of the murdered man. A girt of 3,uuu was received from a maiden aunt of Mrs. Waite, a Miss Peck living nt a hotel here. Dr. Wuilc urged Miss Peck to give him more nionoy and subsequently tho dentist got J30.000 from her which he said he would In vest. On September 20. 1914, Dr. Waito Invited his fnther-ln-law to come from Grand itapids to live with him here, and a few days after, the .lenlist began a study of deadly germ diseases, llo visited a specialist on bacteriology and bought many books on the subject. About this time Dr. Vnlte met Margaret llorton, after ward known as his "studio compan ion" and on -January 10 when Mrs. While's iparents arrived ill this city, Dr. Waite nnd Mrs. Horlon register ed at a fashionable hotel as "W. A. Walters and wife." Dr. Walto obtained the arsenic on pivtenso that ho wanted it to "kill cats" nnd. on tho night his faiher-in-lnw died, he sent a telegram in his wife's name to her brother In Grand Itapids preparing him for his father's death, llo made too an nouncement of Mr. Peck's death, un dertook arrangements for embalm ing tho body and urged Its crema tion, appearing particularly anxious lo have the body cremnted Dr. WuUo did not attend the funeral afv cv the body had been shipped to Grand Itapids lor nuruu. exi-usniK his presence on pretense of having lo perform nn operation In New York, although he was never a surgeon. The state charged that Dr. aiie rMTrred 19.000 to the undertaker who had embalmed the body If he would nreimre a mixture containing arsenic nnd declare It had been used in embalming the body. Dr. Waile received the sentence of death with titter unconcern, liefore he was condemned to death he said in eourt: "I only wish I hr,d more than one body to give nnd I hope that my soul may Co on nnd serve hereafter those whom 1 have Injured."
