L MAY BE Superintendent Hamlin is In re ceipt 1 of a communication from .Jesse McCord, president of the Greater Oregon club, which is a state organization in the interests ot the summer school of the University oi Oregon, In regard, to a proposition which has been made to hold the next session of the summer school at Portland Instead of at Eugene, .be cause of the fact that the National Educational Association will meets this year at Portland during the time that the various summer schools are usually in session. It had been previously proposed to adjourn the summer schools during the meeting of the National Educa tional Association In order that all teachers who desired to attend might do so and to resume the work ot the summer schools immediately there after. The' question now is which of these two plans Is preferable Supt. Hamlin is a member of the executive committee rom Douglas county, but will not express his choice between the two plans until he has heard from those teacherB of the county who are planning to attend the .It. of O. summer school. All such should communicate with him at once. ALL ENTERING ZONE L BE BERLIN, Feb. 20. (via Sayville.) Brown is sending out a number of circular letters to the teachers of the county in regard to the corn growing project which he is endeav oring to introduce in this county. Mr. Brown has been working on this plan for some time and it is hoped that this year he wijl meet with suc cess. The letter follows: ., Roseburg, Ore., Feb. 20, 1917. Dear Teacher: I have been encouraging school boys who are so situated as to be able to do so to take up the cArn growing project. By the rules for the state contest one-eighth of. an acre is required, but I am suggesting that each boy plant ona acre, as by so doing ha can enter the federal contest and have a chance at the gov ernment prizes as well as those of fered by the county and etate fairs. But it is with a larger object in view that 1 an! urging the boys to go in for the acre contest. Douglas county has an excellent climate for corn growing one of the very best in the state. What I have in mind Is to place Douglas bounty on the map as a corn growing county. If I can get 100 boys to take up this acre project 1 wilt arrange for a corn carnival to be held at Rose burg this fall, and will offer liberal prizes for exhibits, and will arrange a suitable program of corn judging and other exercises that will make it a most Interesting and profitable occasion. It is my hope that this may prove such a success that it will become an annual event of great interest, that it may stimulate the corn grow ing industry in the county by increas ing the acreage, improving the qual ity, and bettering the' methods of culture, to the end that the county may come into lte own . as a great corn growing section, and that our boys may be the pioneers in the movement. It win mean much to tne boys financially and educationally, while It is hoped mat through this agency corn growing will become a larger factor in the agriculture of the county. If you have boys In your school who are interested in this work, please Bend me their names and more definite instruction will be given. Very truly yours, O. C. BROWN, County SclTool Supt. 10 GIVE PRESIDENT AUTHORITY TO ACT WASHINGTON, Feb. 20.
