"Kori Korl" means ice, and that's all the Japanese an American traveling in 'ho Orient need know. The rest will Uitf of itself because English is the commercial language there and any Oriental business, man or hotel clerk who has not a smattering of our tongue can have no dealings with the American tourist. On a hot day, which Is every day, we looked for tho Japanese short hand sign, translated: 'Drinks sold here." Appearing over the door of nearly ione-third of the stores in any little town this sirrn can be seen two blocks away. DrinV-i on sale In clude, mineral .Avater. At our cry ..of "ICorl-Korl" the young lady in the kimona dived Into a strong box and emerged with a piece of ice, slightly larger than the loaf of sanitary sugar found here on restaurant tables, carefully unwrap ped nnd washed it, and then put tho ice under n shaving machine. It was quite a ceremony, and curious chil dren gathered to witness the per formance. AH railroad tickets are printed on one side In Jaapnese and the other in English. Signs in Japanese and English announce the name of the station, and there Is even a sign board reading: "Tho principal pointsj of interest here are " j It Is said that the lack of Unguis-; tic facility of the average English man is the reason he refuses to learn tho tongues of other people, and hence all nations have to learn his. On our way to Yokahama there were 26 nationalities on tho ship, each person practicing English on the other. It was the only way they converse in common. At Kobe a fat, uncomfortable Russian, was trying his best to cxplnin to a Japanese se cret service man just why he left the army. The (conversation had our own language sounding like Sam Hernard nnd Weber and Fields dis cussing tho high cost of living. There 'Is- quite a bl of faking aiiout Japanese pronclency tn Eng lish. Given quite nn explanation from six per sons at our table as to how they wanted their eecs he listened grave ly to each; then said blandly: "Nev er mind," nnd brought them in soft boiled all around. Reaching Yoshlda nt 4 one after noon, it being necessary to travel on to Lake Rhojl Immediately In order to catch a steamer train, wo told tho proprietor of the Inn that wo wnnted two carriages. "Yes" he" answered. An hour passed nnd two coolies showed up with our baggage on their shoulders. "Are the carriages coming?" we asked, as it had begun to rain, nnd wo thought of Lake Shojl 12 miles nway. "Yes," he answered. After an other half hour's wait the host start ed bowing us out. Just then a young Japanese, home from Dart mouth college, nppeared. We ex plained our predicament. After a short talk with the hotel proprietor he said: "Ho hasn't any carriages. He ex pects you to walk." Nut we didn't; we rode the 12 miles In chairs. OCITPY1XO NEW KKSIDKXCK. F. Considerable discussion was had at the taxpayers meeting yesterday, (regarding the abolishment of fhe road supervisor. Judge Marsters was called upon to explain the ac tion of tire convention of county judges and commissioners In recom mending to the legislature that the office of road supervisor be abolish ed. He explained that if this recom mendation was adopted by the legis lature it was his idea that maintain enco should be cared for by contract and new road work should be let by contract or done direct by the coun ty court. Comnvisrsloner Nichols stated that ho favored the abolishment of tCs road supervisor, but the retention of: the road districts. He recommended that if the road supervisor wasj abolished that the county be divided. into four, fivo or six districts over which there would be a practical road man. Each of the districts would be sub-divided into smaller districts and n straw boss or road supervisor would be appointed by the road master of tho large district and would work under his direction. Comnrissioner Pinkston J stated that he was in favor of the retention of the road supervisor under our present system. Former County Judge Dexter Rice stated that the trouble with our road system was the diversity of authority and responsi bility, no that tho whole matter should be simply centered in the county court and that Jthe should be given all authority and held strictly accountable for results. He stated that the county court could appoint rond supervisors, straw bosses or adopt any other system which would maintain the roads economically. Ho laid particular stress upon the impossibility of get ting results under our present sys tem where 70 per cent Is returned back to tho district from which It Is collected. He said that this meant from $200 to $1000 for each district which was too much for niaintain ence and not enough for doing any real Improvement. He also pointed out the fallacy of having 65 road districts with fi't sets of road ma chinery, each set being used only a small portion of tho time. An increase of Che automobile tax came In for considerable discussion. S. O. Ilartrum moved that the auto mobllo tax be Increased to $1.00 a horsepower, but explained that he only made the motion in order to get the matter before the meeting in a parliamentary way, he being op posed to a large Increase in the au tomobile tax. Hon. A. C. Marsters stated that he noticed In the paper that the secretary at a recent meet ing in Portland, favored increasing the automobile tux very heavily. Mr. Smith explained that he recommend ed at the Portland meeting that the Ford automobile tax be Increased from $3.00 to $.00 with a maxi mum of $110.00 on very heavy com mercial trucks. The motion was de feated unanimously. WASHINGTON, Dec. 21. Ameri ca's new giant battleships will cost $24,000,000 each and will mount twelve Ifi-inch guns, naval -.i!cfs told the house naval committer yes terday. They will De, so far nr. is known, the largest afioat, and the most poweiful, with liO.UOO horse power electric engine. Rear Admiral Strauss, chief of the ordance bureau, told the commit tee he himself would have selected 14-inch guns for the ships. Bearing out the testimony of Captain Simms yesterday, Strauss declared his belief that in a fight the range of -battle would he below 12,000 ynrds within the fighting range of 14-inch guns. In such a case, he said, the fleet with the greater number of guns, other things being equal, would be superior. On the new battleships, ho said, from 16 to. 18 14-inch guns could be mounted as against twelve 16 inch guns.
