fell to the ground In the full of 1915
will send up a crop of these toads
tools In the spring of 1917, so that
simply because thore Is a light in
fection of brown rot this year there
is no reason to expect that it will
cot be heavy next year. In fact, as
the infection of 1915 was quite se
vere, there is every reason to sup
poso that there will be many toads
tools coming up through the ground
next spring. This spring when the
first demonstrations were made' In
the orchard of L. B. Skinner and
onw, t hoit Hands of toadstools were
through tho ground ready to send
out their spores at blossoming time.
Mr. Brown mentioned two general
ways of controlling the disease: first,
through such orchard practices as
early plowing, so as to destroy the
little toadstools before they have a
chance to send out their spores. An
other good orchard practice Is to
shake off all mummied fruits in the
fall, and turn ! nhogs. The hogs
like the rotted fruit and the seeds
as well, and will make a very
thorough job of cleaning up the
mummies. In the second place spray
ing can be used to control brown rot.
I A spray must be used which is a
recognized fungicide. The ordinary
sprays for this purpose are Bordeaux
mixture, and lime and sulfur. Bor
deaux Is usually put on at a
strength of 4-4-50, while lime-sulfur
is applied at a strength of 1 to 50.
Kor spraying late In the season,
when prunes are of good size, a
resln-lye-flsholl sticker may bo used
to great advantage, with the Bor
deaux mixture. This, however,
should not be used when arsenate of
lead Is present, or with the lime-:
sulfur mixture. Another important
feature of spraying is timeliness. To
be effective, these sprays must be
put on at the proper time.
Four sprayings wore given the
demonstration orchard, except -the
check trees, which were left unspray
ed. These trees were sprayed with
Bordeaux first Just as the buds were
white nnd about to open; the second
time just a munlh later, when the

This is where more fruit growers
fall down than in any other phase oi
the spraying game. They think they
are thorough, but they realty do uui
cover the fruit as they should. In
praying prunes successfully it is
absolutely necessary that there be
tin elbow near the nozzle so that
the nozzle may be turned at different
angles while in the tree and that
the spray may bo directed from the
insido of tho treo so as to get under
neath the flat prune leaves. In this
way tho fruit that often hangs in
heavy clusters can he protected.
Now, as to results obtained in
the Skinner nnd Bradburn orchards.
It was found by an actual count of
the brown rotted prunes on trenj
that had been sprayed compared with
others In the check plots that had
not been sprayed, that In the Skinner
orchard there were over six times as
many brown rotted prunes on the
check plot trees as there were on
the sprayed trees; and In tho Brad
burn orchard tho ratio was some-
: thing like ono to 30 or 35. This
I means that in the Bradburn orchard
I the prunes wore nlmost absolutely
free from brown rot in the section
, which had boon thoroughly sprayed.
The cost of spraying tho Skinner
1 orchard, including materials and la
. bor, amounted to ubout $30.00 an
i acre, for four spray Inn?. It must
t be borne In mind, however, that the
copper sulfate or Milestone Is used
: in the making f Bordeaux mixture.
