' :' Maurice McLaughlin, California's illustrious tennis "comet,"' may never have part in tournament play again according to recent word received in the cast by his friends. At any rate he does not plan to come east to play this summer. He is said to have thought unjust the criticism he met when he ventured to open a sporting goods business with his doubles part ner, Thomas-G. Bundy. McLaughlin is not wealthy and must give over most of his time to business. Albert Hopkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hopkins, ot Canyonville, accompanied his patents and sister to Uoseburg this morning and will remain in this city until the local company of coast artillery leaves for the encampment. He Is a member of the hospital detachment and will drill with that organization tonight. Leo Devaney haF accepted a posi tion at Portland with the Overland Auto- Company, Pacific coast brancK factory. He will leave Uoseburg Sun day dr Monday and enter upon his duties the first of next week. He has been employed in the Motor Shop garage for several years and is well known throughout the state as an excellent mechanic. Hale left this inoruing tor Portland where she will visit with her daughter for a few days. Mrs. W. P. Tait left this morning for Yoncalla where she will spend a few days visiting wtlh friends. Mrs. William Soesbe and daughter, Mrs. E. A. Stott, of Sutherlln, visit ed in Uoseburg ono day this week. Mrs. M. M. Vanllorn and son, Mr. Fred Vanllorn came in from Happy Valley today to enjoy the chautau qua program. T. J. Schneider pass od through this city last night on their way by auto from llallas, Texas, to Seattle. Mrs. Geo. McCulloch and daugh ter. Trances, left this afternoon for Eugene where they will spend. a week or ten days at the home of Mrs. V. V. McDonald. . V. E. Bosserman, the S. P. ticket sgent, will leave here Sunday for Corvallis, to which office he has been promoted. His wife will follow later In the week. Bill Taylor returned this morning from 'rinlty county, California, where he has been working in a mine Tor the past few weeks. He left this afternoon for Norton whore his par ents havo located on a large stock ranch. Mrs Dr. Plyler and daughter Kve lena left for Coquille this morning. and will be absent about six weeks j during which time they will visit rel-1 atives and friends at various points on the coast.
