Gibbon's "Hearts & Faces" had invited the world to Eazo upon the intimate life of several persons Internationally famous, and vell inown in the daily life o'f the British metropolis. The book has been broOdht to New York to be pub lished. I Git)bon's life reads like n romance. fBe was born in Ceylon, the son of a titled Scot, educated in Glasgow: 'ifiven a defrrce, "Cum Laude," at Christ Church (where Kine; Edward was schooled). Oxford; admitted to classes in German universities and to the art schools of Paris and Lon don, including the famous "Lanir hRm"; edited for a time "Black & White," one of London's bijr maga zines: elected an officer of the Cir cumnavigators' club because of his Rlobe-trottinp achievements: author of several historical books, and now on the threshold of new ennqaests in a field but recently entered. A lumber planing mill of 60,000 feet capacity, combined with ,a lumber purchasing agency, is to be estab lished aiong the line of the new Twohy railroad In South Grants p2KBt according to announcement made hero tonight. ' The Frank P. Doe Lumber Com pany, of San Francisco, is to put in the new mill. 'The company Is rep resented in this city by P. J. Hav io, who gave out the information. A sito of seven acres along the new Twohy railroad and the Pacific iihway has been leased for five years with an option of purchase. A siding will bo built at once and the nlaning mill will be under construc tion within 20 days, all the ma chinery having been ordered already, Mr. Savage declares. The company operates a number of plants along the Pacific coast and buys the un dressed lumber from the various lo cal mills, (Khcs I and ships It east. Tho Doe Company contracts with I ho mills for lumber of No. 2 shop and better, making a constant cash market for all lumber of that grade. Contracts have been made with the mills of Schmitt Bros., Harry Smith! and McCulIo & Chrlatio for their en-! o ;"..t (d tho higher grades of 'timber. The ))6nus for eaeh miner amounts to about $1 a day. 'The bonus system, adopted by the mine operators February 1, is rov erned by the prices of the metals produced mostly gold, copper and silver.
