Thirty prominent Democrats gUh- ered lust night at Mho' court house! j for the purpose of organizing a Wood- j i row Wilson league. The boys' band j had been engaged and played sev-I j eral numbers on the street before I going to tho court house where the j meeting was called to order by Tern-1 porary Chairman It. R. Turner. Air. j G. Y. Harry, state organizer of the j leagues was then introduced and in ' a low woniH explained the purpose j of the club. The movement was first started1 by a number of Portland men whoi were friends of the president and j desired to see him re-elected; Theyj held a meeting one1 evening, drew up! a constitution and eletccd officers j and In a short time had formed a i large club which now numbers ItiOO mem'bora in Multnomah county. A committee was then appointed to or ganize branch leagues throughout the state, but on acocunt of the bad weather and the necessary work in circulating tho president's nominat ing petition, nothing has been done until the past few weeks. At the present time the league is contem plating a wide advertising campaign which will sot forth the accomplish ments of the 'administration. Mr. Harry stated In his explana tion that the association would have no part in state or county politics, bilt would confine itself wholly to the work of placing before the peb-; pie In the doubtful status the value: of a democratic administration.. It. would be its purpose to work for' the: nomination and election of Woodrow' Wilson and to defend and sustain him In his administration. The fact that many Republicans wore becom ing members of the league was cited, by Mr. Harry as a proof that people; were breaking away from party poli tics. ; After soveral leagues havo been organized about the state a conven tion will bo held tat Portland( at' which delegates are expected to at tend from all the various branches and at thlB time a state organiza tion will bo formed and the work which Is now being carried on by the Portlnnd association will be turned over to this body. Mr. Harry urged that the club make nn effort to gain women members and that they give prograniH consisting of music and good speeches, which would prove at tractive. After the reading of (he constitu tion the following officers were elect ed : L. A. lTeland. president; Mrs. H'm, noil, vice-president ; H. C, Darby, secretary; V. H. rTsher.
