V THE EVENING NEWS, 8ATURDAY, APRIL 22, 1016. 4 INTERESTING LETTER ABOUT -HOSELURU, PAST AM) FUTURE GRAND MAY BALL. ' ' Tuesday, May 2nd, at Arm- ory. Music furnished by Ott'a orchestra. Price of admission Editor News: ; We wonder if the people of Rose burg, and especially those who are .looking forward to the time when; $1.00, ladies free, to be given this city will have two, three or five; by the mouibors of the St. times Its present population, have! Joseph's Parish. A cordial In cver stopped to consider the fact ! vitation is extended to the peo that Roseburg's trade area, or that J pie of Roseburg and Burrouiid- area which is available for the pur- Ing country. 400-tf pose of contributing to its develop ment has been constantly shrinking' during the last 30 years. Talk to' some of the old timers who wore here before the railroad from Rose-, burg south was completed, which was in the early eighties, and you' will doubt seriously whether or notj the volume of trade which passed through this city was not nearly as great, if not greater than the pre-; ent time. In those days, Roseburg the value of her crops must bo adopt ed. In what way can this beat be done? There is one great resource which stands out before all others both in value and In availability, ; and that is her tremendous timber supply,- which must of necessity be , made tributary to this city and con- j tribute to ner prosperity and growth. Of course thin will he doevloned in commanded the entire trade of thej tjmj W(j heard sM .,0 souinern ena oi ine siaie. jacitsuu ville; Grants Pass and Ashland all sent their wagon trains here, carry ing doarts of grain and other pro ducts, as well as gold dust and liug-1 gets, and went back loaded with nier-. EASTER SUNDAY AT " ' " " THE M. E. CHVHCH. chandise purchased in Roseburg. To sell an immense wagon load of mer chandise to such a customer was( not uncommon for those old time merchants. Three large grain eleva trs were necessary to handle the wheat and oats which were grown or hauled to Roseburg. It is on record that one of these large local firms loaded and sent to England a whole shipload of wheat in the sev enties. Now all of the commerce from which Roseburg can expect to bene fit must originate within a territory which is bounded by the Cascades on the east, the Coast range on west. years ago, and are, in fact no uesrer to it than at that time. The people j of Roseburg, however, have now the opportunity to make this Immense asset available at once. By constructing a railroad from this city to the confines of the large timber belt to the east of us, they can make certain the erection of a saw mill which will but be the fore runner of many more of the same kind of industries, and will stimu late the construction of other fac tories using our lumber as a rawj material, and furnishing employ ment for hundreds of our citizens, as well as increasing our population by j 1 .leni.lncr ntliarn Frnin lha mitsMn tn ; satisfy the demand for labor which Offering 1 will thereby be created. We cannot j expect to grow unless we furnish i employment to those whom we ex l pect to swell our population. The Early Sunrise service, 6 to 7:15 a. m. Even in this umaH territory are many small trad ing centers and country stores which take some of the local trade, from the Roseburg merchants. When; formerly every one came to Rose-j burg to purchase merchandise for their daily needs, now thdre Is a country store every few miles doing, in the aggregate a fair .business, i Where formerly every dollar which! was spent went at least to some one In the county, now many thousands go annually to swell tho' dividends of the mall order houses. I All of these facts go to point out the conclusion that Roseburg in or der to Justify her growth to the point which every loyal citizen ex 'necU her to reach, must make the most oher opportunities which lie at her door and which are tributary to her, as a trading and commer cial center. In the old country, where popula tion is dense and land scarce, the farmer applies himself to cultivation of the soil in the most intensive manner possible, ji. This, jjln a way, Roseburg must do. Every resource which can in any way contribute to her growth and prosperity must be utilized. Every Industry which is suited to her environment and nat ural condition must be stimulated Every means which will tend to in crease tne fertility of her boII, and wish to see more people lh Rose burg without furnishing the means1 by which they might secure a liveli-j nood.
