Often do we hear the complaint, "If we only luid room fop growing dow ers!" iraMe by those 11 nt'ort unatus whose luiiies are crowded on the ull too small city lot. Vet it seldom oc curs to the ni to utilize the parking strip for dower beds, thereby uratify- iux their own desires and at the same time making the dusty city streets h veritable bowel of bloom. Most of us consider that we have reached the limit of possibilities when we have sown the space bordering the pave ment with wrnss seed and set out a tree. But when the space is filled with liowers things are different. Even the thoughtless ii iid careless have scruples concerning (lower beds. Besides, most cities have ordinances prohibiting the mutilation of shrubs and trees In the parking. Where I he dwelling opens directly on the street a parking tilled with shrubbery lends an air of seclusion and privacy and at the same time cuts o(T much of the dust of a busy thor oughfare, while (lie shade of green boughs is very grateful to the passer by. American City. ; t The Welfare of Her Own Children Wi the Incentive. The welfare of her own children started an Indiana mother In civic ef fort and eventually drew her out of her own home to lead a victorious struggle for a better housing law for the whole state. Mrs. Albion Bacon tells in the Survey how it all began: "Going home with my little girls skipping at each side of me, I surveyed the school grounds. I hey were cov ereil with cinders and broken rock. " 'This is what roughs up our shoes so and skins our knees when we fall down,' said one of the children; "'And see here,' exclaimed the oth er, 'what the boys throw at each other.' "It was a pile of decayed vegetables, chicken heads and other garbage at the back of a grocery opposite the school yard. "That afternoon 1 had a long talk with some of the leaders of the Civic Improvement association, whose chil dren went to the same school. A few days later a small procession composed of civic improvement leaders and other young mothers beside myself walked into the city huiluinu and up to the otlice of the city attorney. "If the city attorney should confirm our hope that the title of the city was clear to the old canal bed which form ed the site of the school building In question there would be a large- tract available for playground purposes. "There was some discussion, tu which tlie ladies took an animated part. I had expected to remain In the background, hut with some surprise and confusion I found myself taking a hand tu the argument. ' "It was like a pinnae through ice into freezing water. But the lee was broken, and I was Initiated Into civic work! We were given slight encour agement and left the city building, disappointed, to plan the next step. After lunch further effort and agita tion, in which I was not nble to take part, the matter came to n definite set tlement, a goodly tract was added to the sell oo I grounds and the whole fenced in and Improved. And so our effort bore late fruit" They are beverages that please even the most critical, for they are delicious and pure, being made from the purest materials and under the most sanitary conditions. Dr. Iirluker, president of Lehigh uI versity. in a recent address on "The Conservation of the Natural Resources of the Nation," outlined the value of conservation as applied to ordinary life and activity and to the surround lugs of workers of brain or brawn. He said In part: "Let us apply the study of conservt tion to the young men of our schools and colleges. Today you are heinj: trained in school buildings that are! well ventilated and lighted. Vou arc provided with ample athletic ground" i for recreation and exercise. The change from what whs afforded In the past comes home to me when I look n round j my nlma mater (Lehigh) and notel what the students today have to make' life healthful and pleasant as contrast ed with what we had four or five dec ades ago. j "Today the great corporations of our land, employing large bodies of labor-1 era, realize that to get the best work out of their men It is to their interest j to see that the men are provided with j good houses a ml healthful surround ings and that provision Is made for amusement and open air exercise.
