At tho fliHt station south of Koe ImrK ho secreted the pouch and mil turod his plans on a following trip. Ho cut the pouch and took out the gold du.t (which In those days was UHually jdaced In yeast powdor cans, several of them Hocured tuKuther) and throw thu mail pouch into the river near by. Having commenced his scheme ho had to work rapidly without delay. Consequently he soon left the stage line. Tho dust not reaching Its destination was report ed short. The greenbacks were not in jured by being water soaked. I nderwood got ox-Sheriff John l-'ullerton. Hon. J. V. Ku Norton's father, to accompany him. They went to tho mint at Philadelphia, Pa., and learned that a certain lot of gold dust agreeing In quantity with that which had been stolen had been pro. sented thero and tho party had ob tained tho coin for the wuno. The description tallied with tho driver. Tho driver had set h la pegs for Texas, and I'mlerwood and I'uller ton took up the trail and wc;; no. long In ofertaking thL, fugitive, ho was hrought hack to Portland, and tried before Judge Deady, ron, victed and sent to tho penitentiary for a term of years.
