While hero Mr. Straub interviewed a number of business men regarding their altitude toward the referendum meusures providing for the cancella tion or certain university appropria: tlons. In almost every instance the business men of Itoseburg expressed themselves ns displeased with the at tempt to belittle Oregon's education al institutions by reducing the ap propriations authorized at the last session of the state legislature. In fact, Rosoburg and Douglas county can be dopended upon ,to give a substantial majority against the ref erendum of the measure. crrv news Dr. J. L. Phones: Office 108, res idence 149-J. tf Senator Wood, of Washington county, and frank llolcomb, a friend, passed through here this morning enroute to Canyonvllie where he will spend a few days hunting. During their brief delay hero this morning Senator Wood was entertained by District Attorney George M. Brown. C. A. Stevens, against whom his wife recently filed a suit for divorce, today, filed a cross complaint in the circuit court. Mr. Stevens admits that he mnrried his wife, Elenora Stevens, at Oakland, on April 2G, 191 3, and that one child was born to their union. Ho denies all other allegations contained In the com plaint. In his cross-complaint Mr. Stevens alleges cruel nnd inhuman treatment at the hands of his wife, the utterance of vile language, and the neglect of he' household duties. Mr. Stevens Bays his wife repeatedly threatened to take his life, and would have probably made good her promise bad It no been for the in terference of frlende. Mr. Stevens also charges his wife with attending public dances, witiuut tho least re gard for her child or husband. Mr. Stevens asks for :i decrc, the cus tody of the minor child and such other relief as the court may deem expedient. Mr. Stevens is one of Oakland's best known residents, hav ing been engnged In the lumber busi ness there for years.
