Later I set up for myself as a retailer of drugs. Though our system was perfect, we bad some narrow escapes from com nilttlng unintentional murder. When any of my clerks made a mistake I Impressed upon blm tbe Importance of being careful, but I could not in my heurt blame them. There are occasions where s person who is perfectly methodical, sdheres to s system, exercises every care and yet will do something that he can never aflerward understand why he did It Then there are occasions when It Is Impossible to Hi tbe mind on one's work. One day not long after I had net up for myself a young lady came Into the store and asked for some harmless medicine. At the same time a man asked for a poison with which to kill bugs. Tbe young lady happened to be one who Impressed me. I couldn't keep my eyes off her. Before the two different packages were ready otber persons csme In. and 1 did one of those things 1 should not have done. In stead of psylng no attention to new comers till after serving those present I undertook to serve all of them. What was the result? When tbe young lady who had called for a simple remedy and the man who wished a bug poison bad gone a horrible suspicion came Into my head that I had given the pol on to the young girl. I could not warn her. for I didn't know who she was. Why bud 1 broken my rule about serving a number of persona at once? I couldn't snswer tbe question except for the reason that I bad been very much stmck with tbe young lady. In deed, I had looked at her so admiringly that I bad noticed a taint flush come Into her cheek. But the fearful coiim quences of her or any one else takinc the dose of the bug poison for the medl cine she hod called for would surely result fatally. A crisis hung over my head which, till it bad passed, would keep me In s frightful suspense. As soou as the calamity occurred. If I hud made the error i feared I had made, the medi cine I had sold would bs examined, my name would he on the package and I would noon hi'iir of the trouble. The best that could lie said for my comfort was that I would no, likely be tried for murder, because I had no motive for puisotiiug uuy one. Furthermore, my business would be ruined and t would not have the heart to go elsewhere and make another start. Every morning and every evening 1 took up a newspaper with fear and trembling, wben a week had passed I felt that the danger was somewhat lessened. Tbls gave me a feeling similar to tbat of one who may expect at any moment to drop down from heart disease, apoplexy or some otber fatal dlaesse. I am one of those persons whose Mo tive. ImsglnaUve minds may Influence their bodies. I became morbid, then III. simply from suspense. 1 took a partner Into my business sad absent ed myself from it moat of the time. A physician told me thst t wns going into s decline. But 1 knew well enough that If 1 could be assured that I had not killed any one I would be well enough. Finally It occurred to me that If the young lady had not suffered the consequences of my possible error she would likely bavs visited my etor sgaln. One day I was wandering aimlessly through an unfrequented street tor tured by my troubles when, turning a corner. I cnuio face to face with the girl whose fate was driving me into melancholia. There she was. tripping along us healthy, as rosy, as fresh as llfo. Beside myself with Joy, I made ono bound, caught her In my arms and covered her face with klases. When I reallxed what I hsd dons I wss stricken with a fresh terror leaf she have me arrested for assault In stead, when I released her she smiled at me through her blushes and asld.
