BREWERY ALSO IMPLICATED No Unit) For The Trial I Ins lJeen Sot Indictment Is SeiUed and Specific Charge Is Not Known. Charged jointly with the Roseburg Brewing & Ice Company with the un lawful sale of intoxicating liquor, Mayor Joseph Micelli was early this afternoon arrested by Sheriff George K. Quine on a bench warrant issued at noon today by Judge Hamilton. The grand jury reported late this morning and a number of true bills were returned. The Indictment was sealed und Its contents could not be learned. The News Is not able, therefore, to give the specific charges upon which the indictment was found ed. The warrant upon which the ar rest was made, however, states that the charge Is the unlawful sale of intoxicating liquor. Mayor Micelli gave bond in the sum of $;" 00.00 and was released from the custody of the sheriff. No trial date has been set and It is not .probable that a hearing will be had on the charge till the next term of court which meets in February. Joseph Micelli was elected mayor of Roseburg at the election held here in October of 1911. Prior to that time he served on the council for a number of years. His resignation as ma.'or of this city was requested a few days ago by Governor West, The mayor h.aB up to this time refused to comply with the request. KXTKA Just before going to press it was learned that Attorney Elbert Hermann, representing Mayor Micelli had appeared at the court house and requested that Mayor Mi celli be given until tomorrow morn ing to file his bond. "The Broken Law" which appear ed here Tuesday night with Con stance Crawley in the leading role was greeted by a fair sized and ap preciative audience. Roseburg thea tre goers have seldom witnessed a better performance on the local stage. The scenery, while compelled to be contracted on account of the size of Hie stage, was well arranged und carrki their uiTects splendidly. Tae play is of English origin and uses as its theme the dual character of that country In regmd t o hus band and wife. Ti.o uni'aiihfal hus band, the unhappy wife and the friend In need are the principal characters in the drama. Miss Craw ley as the unhappy and later as the untrue wife, curried her part with wonderful expression. Arthur Maude as the unfaithful husband also did well in his part. The other charac ters were well presented, and the au dience frequently applauded the climaxes. HOLD INQUEST POINTED REPLY Over the Remains of the Late Whitcomb Fields. VKRIICT JK1THXKI. After a brief deliberation, the coroner's jury late this af- ternoon returned a verdict. In which it was found that Whit- comb Fjelds came to his death as the result of a self-inflicted 4 gunshot wouud. The Inquest over the remains of the late Whitcomb Fields, who was found dead in a room at a local hotel early yesterday, was held un der the direction of Coroner Jewett, assisted by District Attorney George M. Brown, at the court house today. The coroner'8 jury was composed of Napoleon Rice, L. MUledge, Ernest Applewrlte, R. L, Stephens, Carl i). Shoemaker and Oscar Llndsey. Among the witnesses examined during the progress of the inquost were Dr. A. C. Seely, John W. Parker, Eugene Parrott, Harry Mattroll. Charles Curry, Leonard Carpenter. Ms. Elmer DeMotta and II. C, Field. Probably the most important testi mony was introduced by John W. Declaring that Mayor Micelli, of Roseburg, stultified his oath by attempting to condone violation of the law, Gov ernor West sent a letter to Carl E. Wfmberly, city recorder of Roseburg, in response to resolutions which were adopted by the Roseburg city coun cil. These resolutions stated that the governor had Injured the name of Roseburg by the moves which he has made and asked that he conduct his campaign through the courts, rather than through the newspapers. In the future, Replying that he Intends to follow the course which he has marked out, the governor sent the following let ter today: Governor Offer Reply.
