There Is an Insistent demand In this county at the present time for prune pickers. Many millions of prunes are ripe and ready for dry ing but they cannot get to the driers for the reanon that there is not suf ficient help to pick them. The News has carried advertisements for prune pickers for the past two weeks,' and some persons seeking employment have received ft, but the demand is greater than the supply. The city council meets again to night. Within the pHHt week two fires hajre iccurred.l Both places might have been partially saved had thero boen more and better fire pro tection. H Is the duty of the city to protect Its citizens against loss by fire, it is hoped that the council will take some action looking to the betterment of Roseburg's flro fighting service, John W. Campbell, Roseburg's or iginal Bull Moose advocate, went to Portland yesterday where he will attend a meeting of the state execu tive committee of the Roosevelt par ty to be held In that city Tuesday) Mr. Campbell will remain at Port land until Thursday in order to hear Roosevelt speak on Wednesday. Mr. Campbell wsb accompanied by his wife Through his attorney J. A. Buchan an, J. 8. Cherrlngton, the Riddle ron I estate man, this morning filed a suit in the circuit court against Bert Riddle, formerly engaged In the hard ware busfness at Riddle. Mr. Cher rlngton alleges In his complaint that he entered Into an agreement with Mr. Riddle, whereby he was to find a buyer for the lattcr's store, and in return forliis services was to receive a commission of two and one-half per cent based on the amount of mon ey Involved in the sale. Mr. Cher rlngton claims that he furnished the buyers and the deal was closed satis factorily to all concerned. Mr. Cherrlngton now asks for a Judgment in the sum of $157.45, or the equiv alent to two and one-half per coiit commission on $0.289. KG. A. M. Smith this morning filed a suit in the circuit court aganst Ivan and Bertha Hope. The plaintiff seeks to foreclose a certain mortgage, ex ecuted by the defendant in favor of the plaintiff to secure the payment of a promissory note In the sum of $1, 000. Attoney Dexter Rice appears on behalf of the plaintiff. Walter Hamilton and wife have re turned from Salem where they at tended the State Fair. Mr. Hamil ton says the exhibits were utfusually good, while the crowds In attendance were large considering the bad weather. Wlllard Waterous, of Illinois, left for his home this morning after a few days spent In Roseburg visiting with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Harding. Mr. Waterous' fath er owns a fine tract of land in Gar den Valley and the same was inspec ted by his son on his recent visit to Oregon. Mrs. L. A. Among those adopt ed were the Initiative and referen dum, reform In civil jury system, the regulation of expert testimony In criminal trials and changes In the Jury system. The only amendment that failed of adoption was that granting women the right to vote. The News was tried twice last week. Once by an attorney repre senting the brewory and once by a newspaper. But the verdict of the Jury which Is tho people was that The News Is NOT OUILTY. Local affairs havo so occupied our mind recently that we would like to ask "Who is running for president of the United States this fall?"
