Thrmmh THE EVENING NEWS Don Martin I'urtado, a Mexican gen tleman of forty uud u bachelor, drew a goodly sum of money from the bank and gave it to Dona Isiibel Alendoza. j bis fiancee, fur the purpose of buying j the necessary furuiture uud the trous 1 senu. This may be surprising to those I of other countries where the bride is j expected to furnish her own bridal j outfit and quite often provides the j home, though In Europe this may bt f done with the dowry which Is ulwayt supposed to go with the wife. In Mbx i r-o the groom furnishes both furniture nnd trousseau. Don Mart tus fiancee was Just balf hU age uud was for a time undecided j between him nnd a young man a cou- pic of years her senior, Jose Ilerrern. But as Jose was equally poor there seemed to be no possibility of their marrying. One day Jose proposed a plan by which they might raise the wherewithal for their union, lie sug gested that Isabel engage herself to Don Martin long enough to secure the trousseau and the furniture, then Just before the wedding tell him she had discovered that she did not love him It was probable that Don Martin would not permit- ber to return the gifts, for be was ri gentleman and known to be a very liberal man. Just how Dona Isabel received this proposition within her heart does not appear, but certain It is that she agreed to it. Don Martin bad proposed to her several times, nnd on the next similar occasion he was surprised to be ac cepted. He told her that she had made him very happy, but that he did not wish to buy a wife be desired one who would love him. If therefore at any time before their marriage she felt that she preferred ti not her man or that she did not love him be would re sign her. The next dny Jose came to see her. and she totd him that she bad accept ed Don Martin and what her elderly lover had said to her. Jose asked what she had replied to his expression of willingness to resign her In case she discovered that she did not love him. She said she bad answered be need not fear for her marrying him without love; that, she promised, she would nev er do. Jose laughed at this, declaring that she was a trump and was work fug the old fellow beautifully. lie was I bout to give her a kiss, but she held him off, saying that so long as she was engaged to Don Martin she would be true to him. It would be time enough for kisses when she had broken with hi in and engaged herself to Jose. Having received the means for the trousseau nnd the furniture. Dona Isa I'el proceeded to the dressmaker and milliner for the former and asked Don Martin to go with her to select the lat ter. But be told her to buy what she liked and If the purchase money over ran the sum he had sent ber he would make It up. Isabel was several months buying a redding out lit; then Don Martin one lay asked ber if she would name the lay. But she wan not to hurry, and lie reminded her of her promise not to narry him without love. At this Isa bel appeared very thoughtful nnd said nothing. Don Martin at this assumed Mutt her conscience was pricking ber uid said: "Consider yourself released from -our engagement. Moreover, the gifts I have made 1 shall expect you to Keep, for on no account would I re elve them If you returned them." "Not if I were to marry another?" "If yon ronrry another consider It o wedding gift from me." When Isabel told this to Jose he was lellghted and asked ber tf she could tot stick the old fellow for something i iore. She promised to see about It. lose asked her to set the dny when iho would innrry him, nnd she fixed It 'or that dny three months hence. A month before Jose was to marry 'sabel one of htn friends told him that le had heard that Isabel was to be imrrled on the day fixed for his and ner wedding. "Oh, that isn't announced yet," re idled Joso. "You must not say any 'hlng about It" "How do yoa know? "I should think I would know since I nm to be the groom." "You?" "Yes, I." "I did not hear that, said his friend. I heard that she was to marry Don Martin Furtndo." "That's another affair thnt my iancce had some time ago. She was 'tipaged to Don Martin for awhile. 'Uit keep this matter to yourself." As his wedding dny drew uear Jose "Taped together all the money he onld nnd borrowed nn amount to be aid by a mortgage on his furniture be made the day after the wedding. ine day the post tun n left nn envelope ' r him. and. opening It. he found an nvitallon to the wedding of Dona snbel Mendoza to Don Martin Fur ado. For a moment he thought it part of the ruse. But the Invitation Am duly engraved, and It occurred to o!ie thnt he had been victimized. He 'ushed to Dona Isabel's house and renthlessly asked her what it meant "It means," she Bald, "that 1 loved ou. who proposed to get by a trick 'rora a noble man the means to marry e- Your contemptible conduct turn J me from you, and Don Martin's nngnanlmous action won me to him.
