Zbc TRoseburo Evening TRews CITV OFFICIAL 1'Al'Kli Crl 1. Blioeuiuker FxiUor and Proprietor i THE CONVENTION. Early reports from the republican con vention being held in Chicago are even more uncertain as to the outcome than at any time in the past lew weeks. Tal't and Jtuosevelt supporters both claim victory. As a matter of fact Tal't can have the nomina tion if he can prevent his southern dele gates from turning over to Koosevelt. There is no question but that tremendous pressure is being brought to bear on these delegates and others that are weak in their support of the president. Koosevelt has the millions of the Harvester Trust back of liim as well as powerful Wall street back ing and the money that is at the command of his lieutenants is without limit. Hay ing delegates either by money or promise of reward politically or otherwise will per haps be the regular business of lieutenants on both sides. Tal't has the advantage be euuse he controls the committee. If the committee can retain its power over the del egates Tal't will be the nominee, otherwise Koscvelt will run off with the plum. There in little chance for a dark horse. Neither side cares to make the proposal and neither Hide wants to take the responsibility. Itoosevelt will either be the nominee of the regular convention or a rump convention. This much is certain. He cannot recede from his position and support! a compro mise candidate any more than he could sup port Tal't, if he were nominated. It means a bolt by the Koosevelt forces as soon as the real test rtf the convention comes which is on the temporary organization. This, pro vided Tal't is victorious in the organization of the convention. Governor Johnson, of California, served notice on the convention that California would Jiot abide any decis ion of the convention which was carried by votes of the committee-seated delegates favoring Tal't. In other words there were 2'X) delegates seated by the committee which were contested by Koosevelt. Tin total number of delegates is 1,078. The Koosevelt forces will recognize only tii votes in the convention as the votes of ac tual ami qualified delegates. If -i'2'i dele gates of these 8-15 unite on the choise of Koot for temporary chairman the Koose velt forces will abide the result. Otherwise not. If, however, Koot is nominated only by the counting of the votes of these con tested delegates, it is entirely likely that the bolt will take place immediately after the roll call. Certain it is that Koosevelt intends to run. And equally certain it is that the re publican party is today facing the most grave situation in its long and honorable history. There is little hope for success at the polls this fall in anv event. Liar! Hil'f! Kobber! Swat! Fraud ! Smack ! Thief! Crack! No gentle reader this is not a quotation from a Wild West novel. It is simply a few words and their echoes at the 'hicago convention. CHECKSAREN.G Roseburg Painter Fleeces Local Business Men. AGEE AND PRICHARD ARE STUNG T.W'T si:i:s ii.xu, ;.vmk.
