Alley returned here yester day after a few days spent at Port land where he created considerable enthusiasm among Portland boosters who will spend Thursday attending the Btrawbefry carnival. In one or the most exciting games of baseball played In this vicinity for years, the Winston team yesterday met defeat at the hands of the Suth erlin aggregation by a score of 8 to 6. The game was played! on the Winston grounds and was witnessed by a large crowd, many of whom went from this city. .Michael J. Patten, aged 71 years, and since the year 1907 nn Inmate of the Oregon Soldiers' Home, died lust evening after a lingering illness. The remains will be shipped to Coving ton. Ky., the former home of the de ceased for burial. Mr. Patten was 71 years of age and a native of Ireland. He wa sa veteran of the Civil .war and for three years serv ed as a private' 111 tile Ohio Infantry. Mrs. E. H. Hlbburd, aged 75 ycurH, and for many years a resident of Dallas, Oregon, died late yes terday after. an Illness of sovernl weeks. The deceased Is survived by six children, Including Mrs E. V. Hoover, of this city. Mrs Hoover left for Dalles ' last night -to at tend the funeral which was held this afternoon. Mrs Hlbbttid had visited with her daughter In this city upon numerous occasions and is quite well known In this locality. Frank E. Alley received a tele gram this morning to the effect that William Churchill, or Eugene, father of Mrs. F. E. Alley, of thla city, died last evening after an Illness of sev eral weeks. The deceased was about 75 years of age and had resided In Eugene tor many years. Other than leaving a wire, Mr. Churchill is sur vived by two daughters, Mrs F. E. Alley, of Roseburg; Mrs. 8. L. Knox, of Eugene, and three sons, H. P. Churchill, of Bohemia; John Church Ill, of Springfield, and II. P. Churchill, or Santa Rosa, Cal. The funeral will be held at Eugene some time this week, probably Thursday. Mrs. Alley was with her father when he died. ' In a slow and uninteresting game or baseball, the Roseburg team yes terday met defeat at the hands of the Eugene aggregation by a score of 13 to 0. Sheridan, administrator of the estate of the late George H. Pitts, today filed his appraisement. According to Mr. Sheridan's report, Mr. Pitts owned personal property valued at approximately $33,729.00. Attorney Dexter Rice has returned here from Hot Lake, Oregon, where he accompanied bis wife and daugh ter who uro suffering from rheu matism. Mr. Rice says Mrs. Rice' and child are gelling along nicely, and hope to receive a' permanent cure at the Hprlngs. Rev. S. A. Douglas, who has served for the past eight years , as pastor of tho First ilaptlst j Church of Albany, has resigned his pastorate hero and has ercepted thei pastorate or the First Ilaptlst Church j or Ashland. He will leave Albany to take charge of his new work In the Southern Oregon city June 1. Rev. Mr. Douglas has bean In the ministry for 26 years. Educated nt Bhurtllff College, at Upper Alton, 111., he bo gun preaching In Illinois and lived there 12 years, holding pastorates nt Farmlngton and Littleton, In that slate. He came to Oregon 14 years ago and served ror six yenrs as pas tor ,or the Baptist church at Rose burg, resigning there to como to Al bany. The membership ot the Al bany church baa more than doubled during his pastorate, and four years ago the congregation erected a new church, which Is one or the best church edifices In the city.
