Mrs. George I-slie and two chil
dren, of Philomath, arrived here Sat
urday evening to spend a few days
visiting at the home of L. T. Thomp
son. I. R. Smith, of the local telephone
exchange, spent yesterday in the
country enjoying a brief outing. Mr.
Smith displayed unusual science as
a fisherman, and brought home a
good catch of fish.
The total receipts of Roseburg's
postal savings hank, on tho opening
day totaled $290.10. Many of the
depositers are laborers, indicating
that they are desirous of receiving
such Interest as is paid on deposits
by the government.

Paul Pierce left for Grants Pass
yesterday where he will spend some
time visiting with friends and rela
tives. Charles Harrison (colored 1, who
wus recently sentenced to un indeter
minate term of from one to Ave years
in the state penitentiary for accepting
money from fallen women, was tak
en to the institution yesteiday morn
ing. On Saturday, Harrison appear
ed berore the district attorney and
requested a parole on the grounds
that he was ignorant of the laws re
garding crimes of this nature. It is
not probable that the district attor
ney will make ant recommendations
in Harrison s behalf, considering the
fact that. Ills crime Is considered a
verv serious one.

uty Sheriff Fred Stewart went to
West Fork on yesterday morning's
train to renew the search for the
bandits who held up and rolilied the
mall car of the California Express.
D. C. Pltzer, a local real estate
man. who has been s)cndllig the past
two months In the East returned
here yesterday morning. Mr. Pltzer
says that he accosted may dissatisfied
people during his sojourn, hundreds

Another sad death occurred In
Roseburg last evening, when Mrs.

wife ot a Roseburg-Marshflcld stage
driver, died very suddenly of heart
! 'allure. Aside from a husband she
I 's survived by five sons, Zeke. Byron
Harvey. Anderson and Cecil, and one
! daughter. Mrs. Li-Roy Curtis of Van-
ouvt'iL Wash. She also leaves sev
cral brothers and sisters, several of
; whom reside In Douglns county. One
Ister. Mrs. A. M Drollinger. lives
in itoseburg. Mrs. Allen has
; .'icied In Roseburg for many years and
I Ih well known In this vicinity.
